KULAK, Rita Mildred
May 29, 1931 — April 25, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Rita Kulak on April 25, 2024, at the Central Okanagan Hospice House in Kelowna, BC. She was born on May 29, 1931, in Stony Plain, Alberta. She graduated from high school in 1949, and worked as a long-distance switchboard operator for AGT.
On October 15, 1952, she married Egon Kulak. They had one son, Kim, and three daughters, Connie, Laurie, and Patty. They bought their farm in the southwest of Stony Plain in 1960. In 1966 Rita and Egon bought into Hiltop Sand and Gravel in Kelowna, and Rita worked at Okanagan Telephone company for several years.
Rita was a chartered member of Altar Guild at First Lutheran Church and a member of the LWML for many years, as well as a member of the Kelowna Toast Mistress club for 10 years. In 1973 Rita and Egon joined the Kelowna Wagon Wheelers Square Dance Club, and they danced with the club for 20 years. Rita and Egon enjoyed travelling to exotic places or with their motor home through the USA and across Canada. In October 2002, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Rita was predeceased by her son Kim in 1994, her brother Milton Ulmer in 1996, her husband Egon in 2004, her younger brother Orville Ulmer in 2009, and her daughter Connie in 2014. She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter, Laurie (Troy) Turton of Kelowna and her two granddaughters Tori (Brian Fairey) Turton and Emily (Mark Kohlen) Turton, all of Kelowna; and her daughter, Patty (Doug) Morrison, of Cranbrook and her granddaughters, Sarah (Aaron) Morrison-Hoy of Okanagan Falls and Amii (Robbie Balcom) Morrison of Cranbrook. She will also be missed dearly by granddaughter (Kim’s daughter), Kendall (Kris) Schuster, and great-grandchildren, Adelaide, Daxen, and Alina, all of Kelowna; granddaughter (Kim’s daughter) Kaley (T.J.) Powder, and her great-grandchildren, Westlee, Maddison and Skylar, all of Calgary; her grandson (Connie’s son), Jake (Claire) Kulak of Kelowna; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Central Okanagan Hospice House or to the charity of your choice.
A Memorial Service, with Pastor Keith Reisdorf officiating and a reception following, will be held on MONDAY, MAY 6, 2024, at 10:30 am (PST) at FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4091 Lakeshore Road, Kelowna, BC.

So sad for the loss of your mom Laurie and Patti. We loved having Grandma Rita at our Turton family dinners. She brought a great sense of humour and a twinkle in her eye, no matter what. Rest in peace Rita. You will be missed.
Jim and I have fond memories of “Auntie Rita’ visiting Kelowna in our youth. Our thoughts are with the entire Kulak family at this sad time.
