We Remember
LANGE, Alfred George
May 17, 1939 — September 23, 2025
Alfred Lange went to be with the Lord on September 23, 2025, in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 86, after a short battle with cancer.
He is survived by Charlotte, his wife of 54 years; his son Sam and his daughter Angela (Ken); grandchildren Conner and Julia; as well as his sister Eleanor (Harvey) and his brother Art (Edith); and many dear extended family members. He was predeceased by his stillborn daughter, Dorothea; sister Frieda and her husband Ferdie; and his sister Doreen and her husband Walter.
Alfred was born near Winnipeg, Manitoba, the second child of Ted and Elsie Lange, and grew up on a small hobby farm where his parents raised vegetables, chickens, pigs, and kept a cow for milk. They were poor, but hard-working, a warm, tightly-knit family given to hospitality. The church they attended was an integral part of his growing up years, and Alfred began to follow Jesus. Following Jesus became the focal point of his life. He became increasingly involved in the life of the church, serving in various capacities.
In 1958, he started working at Shell Oil in Winnipeg and served in the youth ministry of the church. From 1965 to 1968 he moved to Edmonton, AB to attend a small Bible College that was part of the German Church of God in Canada. After completing the 3-year program, he moved back to Winnipeg, returning to his previous job at Shell Oil and continuing to serve at the church.
In May 1971, he married Charlotte Hammerling, with whom he had attended Bible College, and in December of that year they followed the call of the Lord to begin pastoring a small German Church of God in Chilliwack, BC. Their daughter Dorothea was stillborn in June 1972. Sam was born in 1973, and Angela in 1976. In September 1976 they moved to Kelowna. Alfred worked as a construction labourer, and then as a production worker at several RV manufacturers, a boat manufacturer, and finally at a fabrication shop. The family became part of the Church of God in Kelowna, where Alfred occasionally preached and served in any capacity he could. Alfred’s life was defined by his relationship with the Lord, and serving others was a major part of that.
In 1997, he began to volunteer with Prison Fellowship, and continued doing that for over 20 years, in addition to supporting the Bridges to New Life Society.
Alfred loved the Lord and his family & friends. He was a man of prayer, faith, and humility, and he was deeply loyal. He had a positive outlook and was truly a “son of encouragement.” He will be deeply missed by many.
