We Remember

LEE, Joyce Sue
November 27, 1925 — January 23, 2025
Joyce Lee departed this world peacefully in her sleep at the age of 99, leaving behind a quiet legacy shaped by resilience and service. Her life was not marked by grand gestures, but by the small and enduring acts of care that stitched together a community.
Born on November 27, 1925, Joyce grew up on a vegetable farm whose history unfolded with joys, hardships, and the steady rhythm of perseverance. She was the sister to Austin (Kangie), Joan (Benny), Bill (Winnie), Kay (Peter), Soo (Florence), Lana, Jack, and May (Ed), all of whom have preceded her in death, as though waiting for her to join their familiar company.
In 1957, Joyce married Ben Lee, whose exceptional and instrumental life earned him the moniker “Mayor of Rutland” (he was a former Kelowna councillor and a community leader). Though her voice was soft, her influence was no less profound. Together, they built a life dedicated to family and community, rooted in the belief that small contributions could shape a better world. Joyce stood like a quiet tree beside Ben, grounding him and nurturing those around them.
Her hands, delicate yet strong, grew countless flowers and bedding plants, not just for her family but for anyone who passed by her garden – a small act of generosity in the unremarkable but essential task of living. Her service stretched beyond the garden fence. Joyce was a steadfast member and volunteer with organizations that defined Rutland’s character. From the Rutland United Church to the Rutland Parks Society; from the Kelowna Folkfest Committee, to the Kelowna Chinese Cultural Association; and from the Friends of Ben Lee Park, to the Rutland Hospital Auxiliary she stood at the heart of her community – her quiet demeanour a steadying presence amid change.
Her love for Rutland and Kelowna was woven into the fabric of her life, as she helped in many community events and saw her husband’s vision for Ben Lee Park come to fruition. Her own recognition as Rutland Citizen of the Year was less a spotlight and more a gentle acknowledgement of her many years of unwavering dedication.
Joyce is survived by her sons, John and Robert, her daughter-in-law, Tracy, her brother Jim (Ida) and a web of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, each carrying a piece of her kindness within them.
A private service will be held at a later date. Until then, the gardens Joyce nurtured continue to bloom in quiet remembrance.
In Joyce’s memory, donations can be made to the Central Okanagan Foundation – Ben Lee Legacy Fund.

John and Robert, my sincere condolences on the passing of your Mom. I remember her from growing up on Ponto Road. She was such a nice person. Both of your parents were nice and put up with me ;). I remember breaking a basement window in your house and also being told not to step in the freshly poured concrete sidewalk along side the house.. I couldn’t resist. What a great street Ponto Road was to grow up on with so many young families! I enjoyed the swing set in your back yard on many an occasion. I have many great memories of your family. I am sad for your loss. Gordon Hoffman
Dear John, Robert and family.
I am so sorry to hear about your mom’s passing. My heartfelt condolences. I remember Joyce as a soft spoken lady with a sweet smile. I spent lots of time with her and your dad organizing the annual Kelowna Folkfest, volunteering with Friends of Ben Lee Park, visiting her at Rutland Auxiliary Shop and so much more. She was kind, generous and friendly to everyone she meets. Joyce Legacy for the community will thrive forever. She may rest in peace.
