We Remember

LEHMANN, Margaret Annie

September 28, 1922 — December 26, 2015

A woman of many accomplishments and great talents, Margaret Annie Lehmann passed away on December 26, at the age of 93. She was pre-deceased by her husband Fred in 2008.

Margaret was born in Newcastle, Pennsylvania to musical, artistic parents who passed their talents and interests on to their only child. Margaret excelled in many art forms and worked with a range of media including oils, pastels, clay, and metal. She was accomplished in photography and music and was an active member of several choirs including the Lively Arts Singers, the United and Trinity Church Choirs, and the Kelowna Symphony Choir. Margaret played the harmonica beautifully and loved accompanying singers.

In her youth Margaret showed her love for horses, and indeed for all animals. She spent many years working with horses—training, jumping, showing, and acting as a whipper-in with the Toronto North York Hunt.  While in Ontario Margaret met her future husband, Fred Lehmann, a native of Switzerland. They spent several years in various parts of Canada before settling in Kelowna in 1962 where they acted as managers of Far West Farms, land now known as Crawford Estates.

Working as a veterinarian assistant, Margaret demonstrated a wonderful way with sick and injured animals. Since at that time, her employer, Dr. Paddy Clarke, was the only vet in the area, she was often called upon to look after his practice on her own.  She loved the work and was very good at it. For many years Margaret also found another passion by performing as a docent at the Kelowna Art Gallery where she inspired many children to appreciate art.  In addition, Margaret volunteered at the Kelowna Hospital and at retirement homes. Her kind, gentle and understanding manner made her well-suited to bring pleasure to the people she visited.

Margaret will be remembered not only for her several talents and community service, but also for her kindness and extreme generosity.  A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held on Thursday, March 31st at 10:00 am at the Village at Mill Creek, 1450 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, BC.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kelowna SPCA, 3785 Casorso Road, Kelowna, BC V1W 4M7.   For those wishing to send a condolence, photos or share memories, may do so by scrolling down this page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”

  • Dona Moore says:

As the Head of Public Programming at the Kelowna Art Gallery from 1985 – 2000, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and to work with Margaret Lehman in her role as a docent (tour guide) at the gallery. She was an outstanding volunteer who always enjoyed learning about the current exhibitions, meeting the artists, and passing that knowledge on to the children taking part in the School Tour Program. Margaret also enjoyed creating her own artwork, and getting to know the other participants in the program. Her enthusiastic nature enabled her to relate well with the teachers, the students and the public involved in the programs and she seized upon any opportunity to inspire youth to create.

Even after she left the gallery, I always looked forward to her visits back to see the current exhibitions, and to having lunch together at The Grand.

Margaret will be missed by all who knew her, but she has left us all with memories of a gentle person walking softly on the planet.

  • Barb Van Essen on behalf of Norine Van Essen says:

Margaret will be missed by her dear friend Norine. Norine and Margaret shared happy times in the library at the Village of Mill Creek. They enjoyed wordsmith games together, tasty treats, and conversation around opera and classical music. They discussed their faith in God and always made each other smile, just by getting together!

  • Sally Sapinsky says:

I was but a young girl of 10 when Margaret and Fred came into my life at the Crawford Ranch. How impressed I was with Margaret’s riding background and so appreciated her sharing her skills with me and my horse. We remained dear friends for many, many years and I have pieces of her artwork in our house that will serve to bring back all those precious memories.
    Rest in peace, Margaret.
    Forever your friend,
    Sally Sapinsky (nee Claydon)
