We Remember
LIDSTER, James Beverley “Jim”
February 19, 1932 — November 2, 2026
James Beverley Lidster passed away on November 2, 2026, at the Kelowna General Hospital, at the age of 94. Jim enjoyed many things in his life, but his greatest love was baseball.
Jim will be lovingly remembered by his children: daughter Shanno (Richard) Burton, and sons Ken (Marne) Lidster and Peter Lidster. He is also survived by his three wonderful sisters-in-law, Pat Carpick of Vancouver, BC, Lynne Murphy of Toronto, ON, and Gernith Lidster of California.
He was predeceased by his parents Pete and Ferne Lidster; brother Dunc Lidster; eldest son David (Karen) Lidster; and his beautiful wife of 68 years, Peggy Lidster.
Jim was a terrific grandfather who treasured the time he spent with his grandhildren, Steven, Taylor, Kate, Rory, and Jake. He especially loved to take them for ice cream, creating simple but special memories they will carry with them always. Jim was also very proud of all his nieces and nephews, and held a special place in his heart for each of them.
Jim was born on February 19, 1932, and spent most of his years growing up in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. It was here that he and his brother, Dunc, spent countless hours hunting, playing hockey, and enjoying the outdoors. It was also here where Jim developed his lifelong love of baseball. Foam Lake had a great baseball team, and Jim was happiest playing left field. In his words, “that was where the action was”, as most right handed batters hit the ball in that direction.
His love of the game took him far from home once he graduated high school. The opportunity arrived when a coach travelled through Foam Lake. Jim’s father, Pete, told the coach “All the kid wants to do is play baseball”, and so off to Cal Poly State University in California. Jim went to study agriculture and play ball.
Then came the Korean war, and Jim moved back to Saskatchewan to get his Education Degree, majoring in Biology and Physical Education. It was during his teaching practicum in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, where he met his wife Peggy, who was teaching Home Economics. The couple married and moved to Chatham, Ontario, where their first child, Dave, was born. They then moved to Outlook, Saskatchewan, where they completed their family with three more children (Shanno, Ken, and Peter). While living in Outlook, Jim helped with the construction of the Diefenbaker Dam. He was a hard worker, and took pride in his contribution to the Dam. Here, Jim and Peggy joined the local Kinsmen and Kinette Club. Through this organization, as well as curling and golf, Jim and Peggy would make many life-long friends.
Jim then accepted a teaching position in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. And, in 1967, the couple moved to Kelowna, BC, where they would make their home for the rest of their lives. In Kelowna, Jim taught school in Westbank and Winfield. He taught Biology and Physical Education, but really enjoyed his time coaching.
At the age of 55, Jim was able to retire. He had supplemented his income with the ownership of the Shady Rest Camp Ground, and made it into a Mobile Home Park. It was at the Park where Jim and Peggy would celebrate Canada Days, with parades, corn feeds, and salmon roasts for the residents. When Jim retired, he went back to his favourite game, and played Senior Slow Pitch Softball into his 90s. During this time, he joined several National Teams, and together, they won 5 Senior World Series. An accomplishment Jim was most proud of.
An amazing son, father, grandfather, friend, and coach. Most of all, he was a great ball player. We all loved you, Jim!
