We Remember
LIEBHAUSER, Margaret (née Toth)
October 1, 1919 — January 24, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret (née Toth) Liebhauser on January 24, 2024, at the age of 104 years, 3 months and 23 days old.
Margaret was born near Saltcoats, Saskatchewan on October 1st, 1919, and moved to Rutland, BC in 1947. She and her husband, Michael Liebhauser, owned and worked on their farm on Highway 33 for many years before retiring to their house on Rutland Road in Kelowna, BC.
Margaret was always an extremely hard worker. She tended to a very large garden for decades, canning a lot of her crop, making countless jars of jam and salsa, and baking delicious pies. She was also a great cook, making the best perogies, homemade noodles, bean soup, chicken paprikash, and beef tongue, just to name a few of her family’s favourite dishes.
Margaret loved to crochet and knit, with many people using her slippers, dishcloths, hand towels, and special clothes hangers still to this day.
Margaret was feisty, fun, and fiercely independent, living on her own, first in the house and then in an apartment, from 1985 to 2020. She would walk into downtown Rutland to do her shopping and banking, and routinely took the city bus as far as it would take her in every direction “to see what she could see”.
At the age of 100, Margaret decided to move into assisted living, where she spent the last few years in full care at the Spring Valley Care Centre. Her family would like to thank the home for being so kind and attentive.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Michael in 1985; as well as her four brothers; two sisters; and son-in-law (Gordon Morphy).
She is survived by her two daughters, Ann Morphy and Frances Ott; son-in-law, Heinz Ott; two grandsons; one granddaughter; five great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
No funeral is currently planned; if you are interested in attending a future service, kindly email Margaret’s grandson, Rick Ott, at rick.newway@icloud.com.
