We Remember
LIESCH, Ronald L. (Larry)
October 5, 1941 — September 14, 2016
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Larry with his family by his side on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the age of 74.
Larry was predeceased by his parents Fred and Anne, sisters Evelyn, Lil, Carol and brothers Fred and Lorne. Larry is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 53 years, Kay, daughters, Cathy (Al), Jody (Josh) and son Brad (Teryle) and seven grandchildren who he loved so much. The grandchildren Adam, Amy, Jessica, Dylan, Megan, Tanner and Drew bestowed their grandfather with the name “Pa” that he loved. Larry is also survived by brothers Pete (Lil), Ed and sister, Mabel (Bob), sister-in-law Marj, brothers-in-law Bill (Gail) and Joe and many nieces and nephews.
Larry was born October 5, 1941 in Carman, Manitoba and moved to 100 Mile House where he met the love of his life Kay. They married on May, 18, 1963 and started their family who he loved every day of his life. Larry was a kind and gentle man, a wonderful husband and father and had an amazing sense of humor.
Larry and Kay moved to Port Alberni where Larry found his passion for firefighting, starting as a volunteer and then beginning his full time firefighting career on July 1, 1967. Larry was always learning and obtained M.I. Fire Engineering designation among many other credentials. Larry moved to Kitimat where he was the Deputy Fire Chief and then to Mackenzie where he became Fire Chief. Larry would always say how lucky he was because he loved going to work every day. Larry’s firefighters were all very special to him and they spent many years enjoying each other’s company. Larry was a past president of Rotary International and many other organizations volunteering countless hours of his time which he enjoyed.
After retirement Larry and Kay lived in Quesnel and then moved to Kelowna in September, 2005 where they enjoyed many years with their family and friends and wonderful neighbours. We had so many wonderful times with Larry during our many family dinners that were filled with love, jokes and enjoying a Kokanee or two.
Larry loved life, especially fishing, golfing and cooking. Larry was meticulous and loved sharing his abundance of knowledge with everyone.
The entire family would like to thank Dr.’s Davidson, Delorme, Lawlor and Mostowy who gave us precious extra time with Larry. We would also like to thank the incredible staff on 3 East where Larry spent his final weeks; their compassion and dedication was deeply appreciated and we thank you all so very much.
Larry requested no service, a family celebration of Larry’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kelowna General Hospital Fund, Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice.

Sincere sympathy in the passing of a husband, dad, and pa! I always remember the chat Larry and I had about Our shared roots in Manitoba – him being born in Carman and me in Morden. Cherish your good times and memories!
Kay, we are set back on our heels…just received your note today (Oct. 24/16). We have such fond memories of Larry, you and your amazing family. Travis is a Deputy Fire Chief in Kelowna now…… perhaps Larry’s next door neighbour charm started the process. Please send us your phone number so we can touch base next time we are down. Our love to you all….Trev. & Carol

Kay and family, please know we were stunned when we heard of Larry ‘s passing. We had so hoped to see you in Mackenzie this spring but we talked together about Larry and yourself in our mini fire department get together, I am sure both of your ears were buzzing but it was all good stuff. We talked of parties, fishing and just get togethers. You are all in our thoughts as you go through this terrible time. I know Larry is on the other side, checking out the fire trucks there. Bruce and Linda Omand
Kay and Larry’s family… So sad to hear about my old friend and mentor Larry. He was one of my favorite, original Fire Officers at the start of my career as a Firefighter with the Port Alberni Fire Department in 1968. He was a very “smart” Firefighter and always strived for the best in any situation whether it was “on the scene” or dealing with everyday life in the Firehall. When he moved on to bigger and better things I always missed my friend Larry. Missed the way he taught. Missed his terrific sense of humour. I send you all my heartfelt condolences at this sad time to “all” of Larries family
Al Carroll, Fire Captain, retired
A very good leader and role model. When I first became a firefighter Larry said no matter where you are from, if you are a firefighter you are my brother. He left a very deep impression with me that I will never forget.
Condolences to Kay & family, thinking of you. Rest in peace my friend.

Our deepest sympathy to Larry’s family. We have fond memories of our time in the Mackenzie fire department family. Larry always had a smile on his face. He loved having children around and would talk to them on their level. That is what our children remember about going to the fire hall. Those were great times and we have wonderful memories. Our thoughts are with you Kay, your children and their families.

It is with great sadness that I send this note to Aunt Kay and family. Uncle Larry was truly one of kind. His love for family and friends is unparalleled. He had such positive impact on my life and when I think of Uncle Larry, it is always with a GREAT BIG SMILE ! Our times together were always filled with laughter. The world was a better place Uncle Larry in it, and my memories of my time with him will will stay with me forever. Love Danny.

So sorry for the loss of a great man. He was so kind and funny. When I was in the process of getting a puppy, he’s the one who convinced me that I had to find a name with meaning. I applied that advice to every pet since and I’m great full for it. I hope all of his family finds comfort in knowing he’s at peace.
Gail and I send our deepest condolences to my Sister Kay and family on the death of our brother-in-law Larry after having succumbed from a long illness. Larry is now at peace and we shall both remember him and the great times we had together over the years. It is a sad occasion for all of our families and our hearts go out to you Kay during this difficult and stressful time.
We are here for you if there is anything you need or if there is anything we can do for you.
Bill and Gail Sawchuk
A once in a lifetime neighbour and friend. When our sons were old enough to stay home alone but I still worried about them, I had strict orders to go next door if they hurt themselves or felt scared or were worried about something. I always told them, Larry would know what to do and he would take care of them. Which is exactly what he did. If, in this life, we could pick our family members, Larry and Kay would have been mine. We’re so grateful these wonderful, kind and happy people came into our lives. Our most sincerely felt condolences to you Kay and all your family.
As we approach Sept 14, 2018 it is with a heavy heart that we remember our very special Uncle Larry and our thoughts are with Auntie Kay and the family. Uncle Larry was so special and we always looked forward to seeing him. He brought so much laughter to any room and he had the biggest heart. He adored his family and always made sure that they were all doing ok. He always made my boys feel welcome and told them jokes that they still remember. Love you forever and always.
