We Remember
LOCK, Catherine Josephine
October 8, 1930 — August 11, 2024
With broken hearts, and with gratitude for a lifetime of love and support, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, Catherine Josephine Lock. She passed away on August 11, 2024 at the age of 93, following a valiant battle with lymphoma. She spent her final weeks together with family, being cared for by the lovely staff at Central Okanagan Hospice House.
Throughout her life, Cathie prioritized and found comfort in both her faith and her family. This was especially true in the final years of her life. She never missed an opportunity to express her love and pride in her family and her gratitude for life’s blessings.
Cathie was predeceased by Victor, her husband of 59 years, in 2010; brothers, James Graf in 2020 and Joseph Graf in 2024; and grandson, Garrod Howe in 2024. She is survived by her five children: Sue Howe (Glenn), Richard Lock, Peggy Guidi, Sandra Embree (Steve) and Greg Lock (Jeanette); six grandchildren: Nicole Howe, Lisa Guidi (Dan), Michael Guidi, Garrett Lock (Jenna), Cameron Lock (Avery), and Reese Embree; two brothers William Graf (Lonnie), Ronald Graf (Laurell); and 3 great-grandchildren.
Cathie was the eldest of 5 children, and the only daughter born to Peter Philip Graf and Julia Graf (née Fisher) in Rutland, BC. In her early years, the family relocated to the Peace River region of northern Alberta, where she established friendships with classmates that remained to her death.
Her family returned to Kelowna in her teenage years, and it was here that Cathie met and married Victor, the love of her life, in 1951. While continuing to be a loving wife and mother, Cathie had a lengthy 40-year career with the Bank of Nova Scotia. Here, too, she established treasured friendships that still included regular lunches with the “bank girls”, even decades after her retirement.
Following her retirement, Cathie and Victor added annual winter trips to Apache Junction, AZ to their annual summer camping and fishing trips. Not surprisingly, their winters in Arizona also produced many friendships that she maintained annually, even after she stopped travelling, with phone calls at Christmas and birthdays.
During her final years, Cathie was a member of the Northwood Retirement Resort community where she, yet again, established valued friendships with residents and staff alike. She loved to attend the music nights and bingo. Until her vision loss made things difficult, Cathie was an enthusiastic crossword puzzler. Trying to keep her stocked up with puzzle books during the pandemic became a full-time job!
Cathie’s family wish to thank all the staff at Kelowna General Hospital and BC Cancer-Kelowna who provided care to Mom over the years. They also send their most heartfelt gratitude to the staff and volunteers at Central Okanagan Hospice House for the kindness and care they provided to the entire family during her final days. You all made a very difficult time more bearable.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in memory of Cathie would be very much appreciated and can be sent to Hospice House Central Okanagan.
A Funeral Mass will be held on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2024, at 11:00 AM (PDT), at ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1346 Gordon Drive, Kelowna, BC. A reception will be held following the service.
