We Remember

MACK, Joan Doris

September 24, 1939 — February 26, 2024

Born on September 24, 1939, Joan Mack went to be with the Lord at the age of 84, on February 26, 2024.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ron; her daughter, Renee, and grandson Cohen; and her son, Monty (Joanne), and grandson Bodhi. She will also be missed by her surviving siblings, Doug Hird, Lyn Teneycke, Janet Oswald, Pat Simmons, Penny Hird, Naomi Hird, and Donald Hird. She was predeceased by her mother & stepfather Dorothy & Don Hird; her father Art; and siblings Connie Rhodes and Dawn (Alf) Anderson.

In the heart of the Slocan Valley and then Trail, BC, Joan’s life was a tapestry of joy and resilience. She and Ron shared a brief but cherished marriage of only six years, but they have been acquainted since childhood, their bond enduring through the years. A seasoned entrepreneur, Joan, an accomplished chef, presided over her culinary domain at her restaurant, ‘The Duck Stop’, a renowned establishment in Winlaw in the Slocan Valley, BC. In addition to her culinary pursuits, she owned and oversaw Joan’s Store with gasoline pumps; leased out the Winlaw Post Office to the postal service; and she also owned and operated a bustling 10 room motel, exhibiting a deft hand in navigating the ebbs and flows of business.

Joan’s presence was as radiant as her spirit; she illuminated every space she graced. A beacon of kindness and empathy, Joan’s legacy extends beyond her ventures. In retirement, she found delight in exploration alongside Ron, embarking on four memorable voyages at sea. They also journeyed to the Maritimes (a highlight for Joan), where they visited Joan’s mother’s birthplace in New Brunswick and delved into the family history, they toured Prince Edward Island with friends, and explored Nova Scotia together.

Joan’s absence leaves a void in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her.

A Celebration of Life will be held to honour Joan on SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 2024, at 1:00 PM (PST), at SPRINGFIELD FUNERAL HOME, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC.  As an expression of sympathy, flowers may be sent.
