We Remember

MACKENZIE, Paul

Passed away February 22, 2014 at the age of 74.

Paul is survived by his loving wife Pam MacKenzie and three daughters, one son and one brother: Lynette and her husband Mike, Charlene and her husband Dale, Deanne and her husband Shawn, Ryan and his wife Kristine, John and his wife Gena and their children Regan and Stephanie. Eight amazing grandchildren brought joy to Paul’s days: Garrett, Jay, Miranda, Jakob, Evan, Jimmy, Solenne and Mac.

Paul earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education at the University of Chicago followed by a Master of Arts in Language from the University of Victoria. A 34 year career in Education began first in Kamloops, then Saltspring Island and finally in Nanaimo. Paul loved to teach – most of all he loved the relationships that came from teaching – he was a gifted teacher.

For the majority of their time on Saltspring Island Paul worked a beautiful eleven-acre hobby farm. Paul, when “outside” on the farm, was determined, curious, patient and genuine in his love for the animals and his land. All of these qualities defined Paul in every endeavour of his life.

In 2006 Paul and his wife Pam retired to Kelowna. Through Newcomers Club and Harvest Golf Club Paul and Pam have made many friendships that have delivered an immeasurable contribution to their happiness. Thank you.

Paul’s love, companionship and gentle spirit will be greatly missed but never forgotten by his family and friends. Rest in Peace Poppa.

Condolences

    Dear Pam and family,

I wish I had known you had retired to Kelowna; it would have been wonderful to help an old friend be settled. I met Paul while we were doing our Masters at UVic. We were a very small group of full time students, all of an age, and we worked closely. While I have never seen Paul since, our friend Nola and I have spoken of him many times, often with laughter reflecting upon shared moments of pain during that year. I recall his agony at having to dissect tagmemic grammar for a seminar!
I do send my sincere sympathy at your loss. I share a small part of that today.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Mr. MacKenzie’s passing today. He was my grade 11 and 12 English teacher at Gulf Island Secondary School. Mr. McKenzie was by far my favorite and most impactful high school teacher and I will always remember his passion for teaching and how easily he engaged students. Over the past 15 years since graduating high school I have thought of Mr. MacKenzie often; Usually when correcting someone’s sentence structure, or remembering the rules of punctuation. My deepest condolences go out to his family.

Paul was an amazing teacher, and a genuine, kind, and hilarious man. I was glad to know him, and very lucky to have him as a teacher for the years I did.

I am sad to hear about the passing of Mr. Mackenzie. He was my favorite teacher at GISS on Salt Spring and definately made learning English and Literature more interesting. He was well-liked and always seem to have a smile on his face. My condolences to his family.

I was checking Saltspring Island as my daughter and family are going there this coming weekend to look for property to build a house on. I came across this obit and was sad to hear about Paul. Bud and Paul were cousins and Bud left us in 2005. My condolences to all his family x
