We Remember
MACLEAN, Wallace Henry
January 10, 1931 — October 3, 2022
Wallie MacLean was in his 91st year when he passed away on Monday, October 3, 2022, at Glenmore Lodge in Kelowna, BC.
Born in Alberry Plains, PEI on January 10, 1931, Wallie was the son of the late Thomas and Ella (née McLean) MacLean. The youngest of 6 in a farming family, Wallie left PEI to study Geological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He subsequently spent the next 5 years working for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia investigating gold and ore deposits. This eventually led to graduate studies, and a long tenure as professor in the Geology Department at McGill University in Montreal. There, he truly enjoyed his research, teaching, and working with his graduate students. Upon retirement, McGill designated him Emeritus Professor.
In retirement, he moved out west, and spent his time with his grandchildren, working on family genealogy, and enjoying his apartment overlooking the beach on Okanagan Lake.
Wallie will be missed by his sons Charles (Carol) of Calgary, AB, and Rod (Pamela) of Kelowna, BC, and by his loving grandchildren Kaili, Evan, Sarah, and Steven. He was predeceased by sisters and brothers: Jean, Anne, Agnes, James, and Arthur.
Memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated. Flowers are also welcomed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 10:00 am (PDT), at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. I had the pleasure of knowing Wallace while my mother (Alma Coupal) resided on the same floor at Glenmore Lodge. Wallie was a fine gentlemen, always classy. He was proud to tell us of his teaching days at McGill University and often thought he was still teaching. He, as well as many others who made this floor “family” for the various visitors never failed to bring a smile or gentle laugh to us. I have cherished many memories from those days (mom passed in 2018). Rest In Peace Wallace …..”It’s on the house”!

I came to McGill in 2000 as a professor and met Wallie there. Although already retired, he was still very active intellectually, and I really enjoyed talking to him about science, McGill, and life in general. He had a certain pleasant formality to him which was refreshing, and he made me feel welcome at McGill and in the department. My sincere condolences.
I remember meeting Wally when he moved bravely to Kelowna. He had so many interesting stories to tell and such a charming personality. McGill and its students were lucky to have such an inquisitive researcher and teacher. Sarah and Steven were lucky to have such a loving grandfather, too.
I have wonderful memories of Wally and his kindness to Eric and me when we came to McGill.. He was part of the Fabric of the Department and socially present to All of Us. I kept in touch with him in
Kelowna for some years and knew that his Life was full and rich.. Thank You Wally. Anita Mountjoy
We have many happy memories of Wally who was Barb’s uncle. We always enjoyed his visits “home “to PEI and Blair’s overnight visits in Montreal while ferrying our daughter to McGill. We last saw Wally at his beachside apartment 6 years ago at Andrew Cudmore’s wedding in Kelowna. A gracious and fine gentleman from “the old school”
Wallie touched so many hearts in his lifetime. He was a remarkable gentleman and lives on in everyone he met. Please except my deepest condolences for your loss.
