Maiden, Fred CWO
January 17, 1921 — November 4, 2011
January 17, 1921 – November 4, 2011
Fred passed away peacefully on November 4, 2011 surrounded by family. He was born in 1921 in Innisfail, Alberta to Fred Sr. and Annie and lived in Kelowna since 1974. Fred was a World War 2 Veteran serving in the Canadian Military both abroad and across Canada from 1939 – 1970. Fred married Muriel Jones in 1946 in a double ceremony with her sister Hilda who married Clary Milner. They raised 4 children together before Muriel’s passing in 1965. Later he married Thelma Campbell in 1969 and her three children joined the family. He will be truly missed by his wife Thelma and their seven children; Linda (James) Falkener; Trevor (Chris) Maiden; Janet (Duane) Holder; Doug (Donna) Campbell; Jan McKai; Karen (Mike) Allan. He was predeceased by his son Brock earlier this year. Fred was a loving Grandfather and Great Grandfather to many.
As an ammunitions expert, he provided training and assistance to the Calgary Police Force. Fred was involved in searches to locate deteriorating explosives such as the detonators that had injured a number of children in Blairmore, Alberta. Fred was also an avid collector and gardener. The City of Kelowna honoured him with a plaque for his outstanding garden which became known as Arlington Park. He served as President for the Kelowna Garden Club. Fred was active with curling and bowling. He was the patriarch of the family with strong convictions and a soft heart. We have so much to thank him for and will hold him in our hearts. Our gratitude goes out to the staff at Orchard Manor for their outstanding care and attention.
A Special Tribute was held for Chief Warrant Officer Fred Maiden at the Legion Hall, Branch # 26, 1380 Bertram Street, Kelowna on Monday, November 7, 2011. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice in Fred’s memory.
