We Remember
MAKELKI, John
May 20, 1941 — February 1, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Makelki, who died on February 1, 2026, at the age of 84.
John is survived by his children Theresa (Mike), Teri, and Tony (Bree); his grandchildren, Ryley, Tyler, Adrianne, Colby, and Faith, who brought him immense joy. He now joins his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Rose, who predeceased him.
Born in a German village on May 20, 1941, John built a life defined by hard work, resilience, and a deep commitment to his family. He loved the outdoors and could most often be found hunting, fishing, camping, or heading out on road trips in the camper—especially when it meant spending time with his wife and children. At home, he took great pride in his garden and enjoyed raising chickens and pigeons, hobbies that brought him both purpose and joy.
John was steady, strong, and dependable—someone you could always count on. He would have done anything for his family and was always there when it mattered most. In later years, it was a true joy to watch him become such a proud and devoted Grandpa.
John will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery, 1991 Bernard Avenue, Kelowna, BC, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 10:30 am.

Our hearts go out to you and the family.
Thinking of you all at this difficult time and sending our love.
I am sorry for the loss of your father and grandfather John.
As my dear brother, who I grew up with, he was always conscientious in everything he did.
He was also a great family man. Being present when he could at all family gatherings in Ontario or B.C. He took us to the social “meat draws” at the army navy when we visited. Always made us feel more than welcome. With loving thoughts of John, I send my deepest love to the rest of the family.
I am so sorry for your loss. I share in your grief and have so many fond memories of him that i treasure. May your memories of him provide you with some comfort as you navigate this difficult time. Love you all xo
My deepest condolences on the passing of your dad. I have many fond memories of him when you were all small children, of camping, and Christmases spent together. He and your mom were perfectly matched.. Love you all. Aunt Ev
John was my godfather. I knew him as Uncle John. You could not ask for a better Godfather. My condolences to his kids. He will be missed.
It is with heavy heart that I say I am deeply sorry for your loss.
My brother John’s love for the outdoors and his strong dedication to his family, friends and community is the legacy he leaves behind.
This quote could give us comfort, “death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.”
I cherish many fond memories of my brother. Rest in peace.
