We Remember

MATELICH, Maria Antonia

November 21, 1933 — January 24, 2025

In the small village of Isola, D’Istria, Italy, where the Adriatic breeze kissed the land, Maria Antonia Matelich was born on November 21, 1933. It was there she learned the beauty of simplicity—how a pot of brodo simmering on the stove could nourish not just a body but a soul, and how love for family could be the richest treasure of all.

Maria passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025, at Hospice House in Kelowna, BC, surrounded by the family who adored her, leaving behind a lasting memory as warm and comforting as her famous brodo.

Maria was the beloved matriarch of her family. She is survived by her children: daughter Susanne (Bill) and grandchildren Lisa, Shawn, Jesse, and Caity; son Jim (Lana); daughter Jeannie (Darcy) and grandchildren Michael and Mark; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Her older brother, Ennio, carries forward their shared memories of childhood in Isola. She now reunites with her loving husband, Marco, the partner of her heart and the one who always made her laugh.

To step into Maria’s home was to step into her world of love. There was always something happening in her kitchen—a magic cupboard, as her family lovingly called it, from which she could conjure up delights like her beloved strudel. If you walked through her door, you were guaranteed to leave with a full stomach and a full heart, because Maria didn’t just feed people, she nurtured them, just like she nurtured her gardens.

In the evenings, you’d find Maria in her chair, a twinkle in her eye, knitting and watching Wheel of Fortune or Figure Skating. She had a quiet sense of humour, always ready to share a good joke or laugh at one. But beneath her gentle exterior was the fierce heart of a lioness. Threaten her family, and “Mama Bear” Maria would rise, a force of nature, protecting those she loved with a determination that left no doubt where her priorities lay. A woman of simple joys—picnics with hotdogs cooked at the nearest rec. site, long drives through the countryside, and quiet moments of reflection as she took in the scenery. For Maria, life’s beauty was found not in grand gestures but in the little things: the laughter of her grandchildren, the scent of her gardens, and the comforting rituals of her faith and traditions.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to COHA (Central Okanagan Hospice Association).
