We Remember

MCKENZIE, Shirley

April 22, 1943 — April 11, 2024

Shirley McKenzie, born in Lethbridge, AB, on April 22, 1943, passed away on April 11, 2024, in Kelowna surrounded by family, at the age of 80.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 46 years, Neil McKenzie; her children Gary (Mellody) Bergum, Wendy (Brent) Robinson, Valerie Caldwell, Darrell Bergum, and Kimberly Zimmerman (Kevin); 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brothers Dale (Linda) Lukens and Bob Presland; sisters Diane (Glenn) Kamlah, Maxine Patmore, and Gail Simpson. She was predeceased by her parents Jean and Ralph Lukens; mother-in-law Gertrude McKenzie; sisters Anna Blumhagen, Claire Bagan, and Sharon Kuefler; sisters-in-law Kay Elson and Margaret MacNeill; and brother-in-law Ward McKenzie.

Shirley’s passion for golf was evident to all who knew her. She was a formidable opponent on the green, boasting numerous holes-in-one and proudly displaying many championship trophies. It wasn’t until she was 70 that Darrell finally managed to best her, a testament to her skill and determination on the course.

Beyond her golfing prowess, Shirley found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether it was diving into a good book, engaging in a competitive game of Yahtzee or cribbage, or delicately crafting with needlework, she always found fulfillment in her hobbies.

A glass of wine in hand, Shirley was the life of the party wherever she went. Her outgoing nature and social butterfly spirit endeared her to all who crossed her path. A direct communicator, she never minced words and always spoke from the heart.

Above all, Shirley will be remembered for her generosity and boundless love for her family and friends. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC SPCA.
