We Remember

MCNAMARA, Eva Maria (née Takacs)
March 31, 1945 — February 11, 2025
Eva Marie McNamara (née Takacs) left us unexpectedly on February 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and fantastic food. Born in Austria as the only child of Joseph and Gisella Takacs, Eva spent her early years in Hungary before immigrating to Canada with her family at age 12. She tackled the challenge of learning a new language and culture with determination, setting the tone for a life defined by resilience and service.
After mastering English and high school, Eva pursued a career in nursing—because if there was one thing she did best, it was taking care of others. She spent 38 years as an Operating Theatre Nurse in Calgary and Kelowna, helping save countless lives and, when necessary, putting doctors in their place with her sharp wit.
Eva met Tom McNamara in Calgary, and after a well-thought-out and strategic courtship (on her part, at least), they tied the knot in Carson, NV, on September 8, 1968. Tom quickly realized he had married a force of nature—fierce, compassionate, and never one to back down from a challenge.
Together, they built a beautiful life, raising two children, Kelli-Ann and TJ. Eva was a proud Nana to Josh Gait, Kindra Anderson, Ty McNamara, Savannah Anderson (Raustin Grandy), Kia McNamara, Ashlynd Anderson, and Sophia Anderson, and a doting great-grandmother to Foley Zweifel. She loved her grandkids, spoiled them endlessly, and made sure they all knew their way around a good meal.
Eva was a culinary magician and took cooking seriously, mastering recipes from around the world, though her Hungarian and Japanese dishes were legendary. If you asked for a recipe, you’d better take notes quickly—she cooked with instinct, experience, and a touch of magic that made recreating her meals nearly impossible.
A dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Eva lived her faith through service. If she committed to something, consider it done—on time, properly, and with a little extra flair. She was the person you could always count on, whether for a ride, a meal, or a listening ear.
While we are heartbroken to say goodbye, we take comfort knowing that somewhere, she is organizing something, making sure it runs smoothly, and keeping everyone well-fed.
A celebration of Eva’s life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 12:00 pm, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 696 Glenmore Rd, Kelowna, BC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kelowna General Hospital (KGH Foundation). The family also asks that you cook a great meal, tell a funny story, and show up for someone who needs you—just as Eva always did!

I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of my dear friend and neighbor, Eve McNamara. We shared so many wonderful moments together—figuring out what to plant in our gardens, swapping recipes, and, of course, strategizing against those relentless marmots.
Eve was fierce, caring, and full of passion. She had an incredible way of making people feel seen, valued, and loved. Her love language was taking care of others, and it is both heartbreaking and fitting that she left us while doing what she loved most.
She was full of life, and her kindness was boundless. I will miss her warmth, her laughter, and the joy she brought to our little corner of the world.
Rest easy, my friend. You made this world a better place just by being in it.
Dear Tom, Kelli-Ann and TJ, Sylvia and I are so sorry to hear of Eve’s passing.
This cascade of memories included an evening 55 years ago when the newly married Tom and Eve invited me over to their apartment overlooking the zoo on 9th Avenue in Calgary for dinner. Eve prepared beef stroganoff. I can remember the delicious taste even now.
Time is passing by for all of us but the McNamaras and the Maynes have always enjoyed a special place in each other’s lives and hearts.
Eve, please rest in peace.
We will remember Aunt Eve for her great sense of humour, her love of cooking and her generosity.
Our hearts are with uncle Tom, TJ, Kelly and their extended families.
