We Remember

MORELJ, Alojz (Louis)

June 8, 1920 — March 26, 2014

Louis went to eternal sleep on March 26 2014 at Mountain View Village in Kelowna BC.  He continues to be present through his beloved wife Dosalina, son Walter (wife Donna, granddaughter Susan) of Kelowna, son Francis (wife Larissa) of Santa Rosa, California.

Louis was born in Kosana, Slovenia (formerly Yugoslavia).  He was conscripted into the Italian military and, later in the war, into the Yugoslav Partisan movement.  Due to his partisan activities he was expelled from Slovenia in 1947 and was accepted by the International Red Cross as a displaced person.  In 1950, Louis was invited by the Canadian government to immigrate and he settled in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

By chance, Louis found gainful employment as a woodsman; later he was able to utilize his cooking trade (learned in the military) with the Ministry of Corrections at the Thunder Bay District jail.  He worked there for 27 years until his retirement.  Upon arriving in Canada, Louis had called for his Italian girlfriend; they were married for 58 years.

Retirement brought him to Kelowna in 1986.  Living in the Okanagan allowed him time to enjoy his love of wood carving—many of his pieces were sold in galleries in the Rockies.  He also nurtured his garden and fruit trees and spent time fishing with friends.  Louis was active in both the Italian and Slovenian communities.
