We Remember
MULLINS, Edward James (Jim)
—
Edward James ‘Jim’ Mullins passed away peacefully August 30th, 2013 at the age of 87. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Inez Mullins, and his sons Terry, Alex and Stephen.
Jim was born in London, England in 1926. A favourite childhood activity was train spotting, which lead to a lifelong passion for railways and trains. Jim survived the London Blitz of WWII, and joined the Royal Navy before the end of the war, training as a torpedo bomber pilot, and later as a signalman.
After the war he immigrated to Canada and soon after met the love of his life, Inez Bateman, whom he married in 1954. They settled down in Montreal and had three sons.
Jim worked as a technical writer for CIL Canada’s Explosives division, where he helped compile the CIL Blaster’s Handbook. Due to his expertise, Jim travelled extensively throughout Ontario and Quebec to advise construction companies about the proper use of explosives when building the great hydroelectric dams to helped Canada flourish. The City of Montreal also found his skills to be invaluable when they were expanding the city’s subway system.
In 1976, Jim and his family moved to Ottawa, where he became a director of the Canadian Forestry Service of Environment Canada. While there, he co-authored the book, Canadian Woods: Their Properties and Uses, which became a standard reference for the industry, and for university courses on forestry. Long before it was a mainstream concern, Jim was advocating for the protection of the land and resources of our great nation.
After his retirement in 1991, Jim had time to travel with his loving wife, and to devote himself to two of his favourite personal passions, riding his bike, and especially, building and running an enormous scale-model railroad, which was a wondrous construction to behold.
Jim was an honourable man who always kept his word, stood for the right things, and was a loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed.
