We Remember

OLSON, Danny

Danny (Dan) Alfred Olson, age 73, passed away in Kelowna General Hospital on March 9, 2023, surrounded by loving friends and family. Dan is survived by his mother, Lillian Olson, sister, Ingrid Olson and his son, John Steven (JS), daughter-in-law Anh and their two beautiful grandchildren Luc and Isla.

Dan had a successful career in the Downstream Division of Gulf Canada/Petro-Canada based in Winnipeg, Calgary, and Kelowna.  He held various operational roles early in his career, later moving into a series of strategic positions, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the Company’s Retail business that took place throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s.  Dan’s knowledge of the business and strategic thinking was highly respected, and he was widely known for being a tremendous mentor for countless people, particularly those in the early stages of their careers. Dan spent the last part of his career in Kelowna and officially retired in 2006, then worked part-time as a consultant for his good friend Terry Newman as long as it didn’t interfere with his golf game.

Dan was an avid sports fan with a deep appreciation and respect for competition.  As a young man, he grew up playing competitive baseball and basketball.  Later in his life, he volunteered countless hours coaching his son’s youth soccer team leading multiple teams to city and provincial championships. As a coach, Dan made a significant impact on the lives of many young people, instilling the values of discipline and hard work that they still carry with them today.

But Dan’s real passion was playing golf, where he enjoyed many good times over the years with his Petro-Canada friends, his Kokanee golf buddies and his mens night buddies at the Okanagan Golf and Country Club.  When he wasn’t playing golf, you could find him at Prospera Place cheering on the Kelowna Rockets or sitting on his lazy-boy in front of his big screen TV watching back to back football games, especially his favorite team, the Eagles.

But the most important thing in his life was being a father to his son, JS, daughter-in-law Anh and his grandchildren Luc and Isla.  Whether he was sitting on the patio with his family enjoying a meal or sipping a glass of wine on the lake, he will be missed dearly by all of us.

Dan’s family and friends would like to extend a special thank you to the Kelowna PD Clinic for being so helpful to Dan during the last couple years.

Those wishing to honor his life can make a donation in his name to the Kidney Foundation.
