We Remember

PARLETT, Gordon Ernest

November 2, 1931 — March 11, 2024

Gordon passed away peacefully the morning of Monday, March 11, 2024, at the age of 92, surrounded by love, with his wife, Alva, and son Mark beside him. He was admitted to hospital on Saturday, March 9th, and together with Alva, chose not to go ahead with any treatments. Instead, he spoke to family, video chatted with his daughter in Australia and called his buddies to say goodbye.

Born and raised in Bracebridge, Ontario, son of Horace & Gladys Parlett, Gord was predeceased by his brother George and sister Patricia. He is the beloved husband of Alva, father of Michael, Lynn, and Mark. He is the much-loved Poppa of Kyle, Megan, and Iain.

Gord was likeable and a friend to many. Alva and Gord met in high school – their love of dancing brought them together. After marrying in 1954, they lived and worked in Toronto, buying their first home in Malton, Ontario where Michael, Lynn, and Mark were born. They moved back to Bracebridge in 1962, building a new home and raising their three children near family. In 1985, they began their journey west, first living in Fort McMurray, AB before moving to BC and settling in West Kelowna. Everywhere they’ve lived, Gord & Alva loved being part of their community, welcoming friends new and old into their home.

Gordon always had a head for numbers, working most of his life in bookkeeping and accounting for large companies and small family run businesses. He enjoyed volunteering, spending time as a Cub Leader, marshalling for golf tournaments, and lending a hand at church events. After retirement, he especially enjoyed being a mentor for the Ambassadors group for young people – becoming an honorary Grandpa to the participants.

Gord & Alva loved to travel, and they travelled as much as they could, enjoying cruises and trips to Australia to visit their daughter and grandchildren. They especially loved a driving holiday, heading to Gabriola Island regularly to visit their son and twice driving from BC to Ontario, visiting friends and family along the way.

Gord was most engaged when playing cards, being an excellent bridge player, as well as a lifelong love of playing golf, and all sports, and in his quiet time was a prolific reader.

Gordon was, simply put, a good man, with a smile and a kind word or a joke for everyone he met. He worked hard, loved his family, and enjoyed being with his friends.  He will be sorely missed by all those who have known him and his family will hold him forever in their hearts.

In lieu of flowers, Gord kindly requested that a donation to the Kidney Foundation (www.kidney.ca) would be welcome.
