His family was originally from Nadalon, Punjab, India.  He immigrated to England in 1967 and then moved to Canada the following year. After teaching in Victoria, BC for a year, Nirmal drove to Terrace, BC on his own in his first car, a 1959 Ford Falcon. Once settled, he raised his family and lived the rest of his life in Terrace.

In 2021, he was one of 25 BC residents to receive the prestigious BC Achievement Community Award.

    Dear Rani, Angie and Neelam,
How sad I feel to learn of NIrmal passing. He was a delightfu person, a wonderful friend and a truly exemplary citizen. His hospitality was legendary! I first met him in the early eighties when he was on the Terrace library board and I was the children’s librarian . He remained steadfast in his support of the library and of children’s programming throughout his life. Though we rarely met in recent years, he always kept in touch. I will miss his presence in my life very much. He gave so much more than he received.
    With much love
