We Remember

PAVAN, Owen Andrea

April 29, 2004 — November 4, 2023

Owen Andrea Pavan, 19, passed away at his home in Kelowna, BC, surrounded by loved ones on November 4, 2023, after a courageous three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

Owen was born on April 29, 2004, in Kelowna to Jennifer and Luigi.  Soon after, he was introduced to some of his lifelong friends within the “Baby Group”. He attended Dorthea Walker and Chute Lake Elementary schools and graduated from Okanagan Mission Secondary School, where he had the joy of meeting other great friends. Owen had a mix of qualities that endeared him to all: He was known for his goofiness, wide smile, thoughtfulness, and kindness.  His laid-back and easy-going nature made him approachable to all and did not betray his shyness.  He carried a touch of stubbornness borne from his desire for self-reliance.  He was modest and did not seek attention.

Owen found his true joy spending all four seasons outdoors, especially when he was fishing, camping, and skiing.  He loved working on projects, from building a shed in the backyard, to wood working at school, and building forts with friends. He played soccer for many years with Okanagan Mission Youth Soccer and hockey with Kelowna Minor Hockey, where he was described as an incredible teammate, leader, and friend.  Owen was especially proud of attending the U15 Tier 3 Provincial Championship in Port Hardy. When not being active, Owen could be found passing his time engaged in a spirited game of CS Go, Rainbow 6 Siege, War of Thunder, or other video games with his friends. Above all, he loved spending time chatting with friends and his extensive family.

Owen belongs to a loving family who will miss him dearly, including his parents; brothers, Liam and Jonah; grandparents, Doug and Colleen Jones; along with many aunts, uncles, Zios, a Zia and many cousins. Baxter is going to miss Owen the way only a four-legged companion and friend can.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and Owen’s palliative care team (including Dr Rassekh, Dr Francois, Dr MacKenzie-Feder, Dr Verhelst, and Rachel Neufeld) for the expert care and consideration Owen and his family received during this difficult experience.

Jennifer, Luigi, Liam, and Jonah would like to thank their friends and family for supporting them through Owen’s journey, especially grandparents Doug and Colleen, who were always there when needed.

Memorial donations may be sent to BC Cancer – Kelowna – Sindi Ahluwalia Hawkins Centre for the Southern InteriorCanuck Place Children’s Hospice, or BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

I did not know Owen, but his auntie Adrienne spoke of him lovingly many times. I am most moved by the strength and love of his family that through his struggle, showed such courage and compassion as well as in ultimate love for him, to rally together. Even through this loss of a beautiful human being, there was such raw beauty in togetherness. I am forever changed by knowing that a family pulled together to be love and peace at such a trying time.
