PELLAND, Barrie Robert Joseph
November 13, 1941 — October 30, 2023
Barrie was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba in 1941, where he grew up with his two sisters and two brothers before they moved west to McLennan, Alberta. He married Mariette (née van den Elzen) in 1963 and started work as a sheet metal mechanic before going back to school to study Medicine at the University of Alberta, graduating in 1974. Barrie dedicated most of his career as a Physician to serving the people of McLennan and the surrounding communities.
Barrie and Mariette loved travelling locally and abroad, and on a road trip back from the West Coast, came across the beautiful Okanagan Lake and valley. Return visits with others started the strong connection to the Okanagan for their families on both sides. They came to live in Kelowna, BC when Barrie retired from Medicine, as it was the perfect backdrop for Barrie’s passions as an avid boater, fisherman, and golfer. Barrie’s retirement also included regular travel to Mexico and Europe, with a special fondness for Holland, his wife’s homeland.
Barrie is remembered by his wife Mariette; daughters Karen (Brett) and Jennifer (Peter); daughter-in-law Amanda (Rob d. 2018); and six grandchildren; as well as extended family members and friends.
A private memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Climate Reality Project or The David Suzuki Foundation.

We are so sorry to hear of Barrie’s passing. His cheerful and friendly nature will be missed and we’ll fondly remember all the times socializing with him at Ken and Marlene’s. Although its been some time Kevin always enjoyed a golf game with Barrie at Michaelbrook, and our two boys still remember when they were little and Barrie and Mariette took them tubing with their boat on the lake. He was a true gem.

So sorry for your loss of Barrie. He was always a great support thru med school and I really enjoyed his humour while reminiscing, during the few reunions we had, over the years.
Our deepest sympathy to all the family. He was my first doctor when I had my first child. After almost 12 years of waiting he took extra care for a safe delivery. He was very thoughtful and so kind. Thank you.
I grew up with Barry in McLennan all through our younger years and teenage years. Apprenticed sheetmetal with him and never had a better friend during those years. Remember those times fondly.
