We Remember
PELLAND, Mariette
February 14, 1944 — October 13, 2025
It is with great love and sadness that we announce the loss of Mariette Pelland, who passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, at the age of 81.
Left to hold her dear to their hearts are daughters Karen (Brett) and Jennifer (Peter); grandchildren Troy, Trent, Linden, Theo, Jack, and Charlotte; and many more whose lives she touched.
She now goes to join those who passed before her, including her husband of 60 years, Barrie, and son Robert (Amanda).
Mariette moved to Canada from the Netherlands when she was 17, and she never lost touch with her roots. She often spoke Dutch with her family, keeping their shared culture and humour alive no matter how many years passed. Practical, honest and funny, Mariette was the kind of person who knew how to have a good time. She loved music and had a beautiful singing voice.
She met Barrie in McLennan, Alberta, where they began their life together and started their family. While Barrie pursued his studies to become a doctor, they balanced the demands of university and raising children — a testament to their teamwork and strong partnership. They shared a love of adventure and travel, visiting Europe often and spending time in Mexico every year. In 1996, they moved to Kelowna, where they enjoyed boating and sunning in the beautiful Okanagan. At social gatherings, Mariette was often the De facto DJ, always ready with a laugh and a song. She and Barrie shared not only love but genuine friendship, and together they built a full and vibrant life.
Mariette will be remembered for the love she had for her husband and children, her support for her family, and her boisterous spirit.
Family and friends will each honour her in their own ways. No formal service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Parkinson Canada, or the BC Dementia Care Society.

Sorry to hear of the passing of your mom Jennifer & Karen. Sending love & prayers your way.
Karen and Brett, I was so saddened to hear of the passing of Mariette. As you know, we spent over 20 years working together and our meetings were truly special as we usually had lots of laughs and solved a few world problems. Mariette and Barrie always enjoyed our company events and they were usually the last to leave! I will cherish all the memories I have of your parents.
Please take care.

Dear Karen, Jennifer and family,
My sincerest condolences with the loss of your lovely mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. Many years ago when she came to the Netherlands she came to my birthday. She had lots of laughs with our family then and had so much fun. This is also how I will remember her. Mariette was a kind, sweet and spontaneous person.
Lots of strength and love from Tony Schellekens – van den Aker (niece)
Dear Karen, Jennifer and family.
I too, will miss my sister, your mother very much. I will miss visiting and hanging out on the patio with her and my other sister, Annette, talking about all kinds of things. Barrie and Mariette always made me feel very welcome and I miss them both.
Dear Karen and Jennifer,
My deepest condolences on the passing of your mom. Barrie introduced us in summer 62 in McLennan. We shared many wonderful times with them that summer. In 64-65, Barrie stayed with us in Edmonton while attending NAIT (HVAC). He then tried to convince me to join Danbrook and Pelland, though that path didn’t happen and we both moved on.
I next heard of them when Barrie and my brother were classmates at the U of A Medical School in 70’s
Although we drifted apart for a long time, we reconnected in a wonderful visit Sept 2016 in Kelowna and spent two memorable days reminiscing with Barrie and Mariette about the 60’s and filling in the gaps—lots of laughs and many cherished memories rekindled.
Barrie and Mariette were such a great team, and always proud of their family. Mariette was truly a “pistol”—she told it like it was and spoke her mind with spirit and honesty. One of her fist questions after not have met for 53 years was “Dave are you rich?”. We both laughed. A few minutes later she accused me of “cradle robbing”..my wife is a few years younger…again more laughs.
Next visit they were heartbroken over Robert’s passing, yet soldiering on with courage and resilience.
We talked of meeting in Mexico or going on a Holland America cruise but neither happened.
I will always treasure the friendship and memories shared with both of them.
With sympathy,
Dave Dinwoodie
