We Remember

PENNER, Bernard

April 24, 1931 — October 18, 2023

In memoriam of Bernard Penner, a BC Highway Legend. Bernard was raised in Oliver, BC, and peacefully passed away at the age of 92 in his hometown on October 18, 2023. After completing his high school education, he ventured to Vancouver, BC, where he dedicated himself to both his studies and professional career. Bernard’s career culminated with his retirement from the Department of Highways. His journey spanned several significant projects, including his contributions to the development of Rogers Pass in the 1950s, the Arrow Lakes Project in the 1960s, and the Sea to Sky Highway in the 1990s. His commitment to the British Columbia highways was steadfast, and it’s safe to say that if you name a BC highway, there’s a good chance Bernard played a part in its construction and maintenance.

Bernard will be missed by his three children, Ed, Bernie, and Karen; his six grandchildren Sarah, Jared, Kelly, Emma, Alexander, and Cameron; and his two great-grandchildren Luca and Nicolas. He is also survived by his dear siblings, James, Margaret, Viola, and Darlene.  His spirit has been reunited with his beloved wife’s, Margaret; and his daughter’s Philemon; his brothers’ Wesley, Art, and David; along with his parents’.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
