We Remember

PERSON, Henryk

Born in Zdunska-Wola, Poland on September 24, 1926, Dad’s journey ended in Kelowna on the evening of June 14th, 2014.  He is survived by his three daughters: Barbara (Bill) Rutley of Kelowna, BC, Peggy (Daryll) Desouza of Bowden, AB and Dagmar Brown of Olds, AB; two sons: Roland (Merriann) Person of Kelowna, BC and Paul (Victoria) Person of Fernie, BC; four grandchildren: Megan (Keith), Ethan, Stefan and Kellen; and two brothers: Georg (Lotte) Person of Vancouver, BC and Richard (Martha) Person of Kelowna, BC and numerous nieces and nephews and their spouses.  Henryk was sadly predeceased by his wife Gertrud and brother Woldemar.

After years of strife in Europe, Dad encouraged his family that a better life would await them all in Canada.  Miles of ocean and much planning brought the 4 brothers and their Mother to Winnipeg.  Eventually Dad and 3 of his brothers were to live in Kelowna.  Dad married Mom in 1955 and 35 years of marriage produced a loud and boisterous family of 5, 4 spouses and eventually 4 grandchildren.  We were all able to be with Dad in his final days.

In Dad’s words: “You all gave Mom and me the best years of our lives.”

Alzheimer’s disease robbed Dad of his mind and then his body and then eventually it took his life.  There are not enough words to adequately thank the staff at The Village at Mill Creek for their kindness and compassion for Dad and for each of us in his final days.  Your caring throughout the years has been exemplary and we are so grateful.

A Graveside service will be held at a later date, to be announced.  Donations may be made in Henryk’s name to the BC Alzheimer Society, 307 – 1664 Richter Street, Kelowna, BC V1Y 8N3, or Christ Lutheran Church, 2091 Gordon Drive, Kelowna, BC V1Y 3J2.
