We Remember
Pirot, Sylvan Henry
—
Sylvan Henry Pirot was born July 30, 1917 in North Battleford Saskatchewan to Joseph and Leah Pirot; he was one of eight children.
Sylvan spent his boyhood growing up in Cochin, Saskatchewan where he went on to attain his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Saskatchewan.
During his time at university, Sylvan met and pursued his future bride of sixty-six years, Eileen. It was through his close friendship with Eileen’s older sisters that Sylvan began courting and later fell in love with Eileen. The two were married September of 1945 at St Paul’s Church in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The newlyweds moved to Montreal, Quebec where Sylvan took employment with CIL. After three years in Montreal, the couple moved to Edmonton, Alberta where Sylvan held positions with Winspear Hamilton Chartered Accounts and Hales H. Ross Lumber Co. before beginning a thirty year Accounting Partnership of his own.
Sylvan and Eileen went on to raise all four of their children: Dennis, Ann, Mary-Jean and Bernie in their family home in Edmonton. The couple remained in their home for nearly fifty years before moving to the Kelowna, BC area eight years ago. In addition to Sylvan’s professional accomplishments, he always found time for his family. From vacationing in destinations like Mexico and Hawaii to weekends spent at the lake during the summer and skiing in the mountains during the winter, family time was a top priority. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and it is said by his children that one could always measure the degree to which he found something funny or pleasing by the amount of gold shown in his teeth when he smiled.
Sy, as he was known by those dearest to him, was a man of unparalleled strength, faith, honesty, patience, love and life. Every action from the minute to the extraordinarily relevant was executed with the same methodical patience and discipline. Sy was never one to put on airs, though anyone blessed enough to know him personally knew without question just what they meant to him.
He was the husband and partner lesser men aspire to, the father all children deserve, the grandfather all grandchildren dream of calling their own and the honest businessman colleagues turn to for solid advice.
Sylvan is survived by his loving wife, Eileen Pirot; their eldest son Dennis and his wife Patty, their daughters Stacey, Kim, Andrea and Cassie; their daughter Ann and her husband Andre, their sons James and Geoff; their daughter Mary-Jean and her daughter Kathleen; their son Bernie and his wife Corinne, their children Jennifer, Jill and Quinton. He is additionally survived by thirteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was held December 27, 2011 by Father Gerald at St. Charles Garnier in Kelowna, BC
There will be a Celebration of Life Mass at St. Charles Garnier in Kelowna, BC on May 19, 2012 followed by a burial at Oyama Cemetery.
Sorry to hear about Uncle Sylvan. I so enjoyed my visit with him in October. My prays and thoughts are with Auntie Eileen and you all at this time. Love Olive
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Cherish all the good memories that you hold. Love Claude and June
What a wonderful tribute to uncle Sylvan and so fitting. Yes, we can look back on some fond memories from our first stay in Edmonton, enroute from White Horse, when Carmen was two, and Auntie Eileen took us off to the mall to see Santa. Also, fond memories of the lake in AB.
All of our love & prayers
