We Remember

REES, Stanley Dowden Jr.

Passed away surrounded by the love of his family on February 29, 2016 at the age of 84. Survived by his loving wife Donna of 59 years, two daughters: Kathleen Ann (Gregory) Schaad of Kelowna, Deb (Al) Liebholz of South Surrey; grandchildren: Jennifer (Jordan) Davies, Ryan (Harmony) Schaad, Jordan Schaad (Catherine Brown), Brett Schaad (Makayla Randall) Taryn Liebholz (Gregor Morrison); great grandchildren Cadence and Asher Davies; brothers Kenneth Rees of New City, NY, Clyde (Deborah) Rees of Charlotte, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in The Bronx, New York, Stan was the third of four sons, born to Elsie and Stanley Rees Sr. He was drafted in to the army on February 14, 1952 and served as a corporal in the US Army while stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington State.

Family friends introduced Stan to the Hardy family of Vancouver. Upon meeting them, he spent many of his weekend leaves with the family.  After leaving the army Stan and Donna were married on September 1, 1956.  They made their home in Vancouver where Stan studied Commerce at the University of British Columbia. They formed a life together in North Vancouver where both of their daughters were born.  In July 1970, they transferred to Kelowna where Stan worked for Home Oil as a territory Rep. He then went on to become a successful independent businessman in Kelowna and West Kelowna for many years.  Stan was a proud and devoted Rotarian, receiving several Paul Harris awards.  He loved to garden and was a long-time member of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club.  He was an amazing story teller and loved to entertain.  Stan’s proudest accomplishment was his family.  He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.  Special thanks to Dr. Michael Koss and the staff of the Village at Mill Creek for their extraordinary care.

  • Shelley Mehus says:

Dear Kathy & Family I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear Dad. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this very difficult time in your life. xx

  • Theresa Fillion says:

On behalf of the Capri Rotary members, may I offer our heartfelt condolences. Stan was a wonderful man, we loved his stories, he had such an eloquent way of telling them with that slightly Bronx accent. He was an amazing Rotarian and gave a lot back over the years to his community and the world through Rotary. He will be sadly missed by all of us. If we can be of any help, please let me know

  • Tina Gair says:

…On behalf of my mom (Gwen Godfrey), I’d like to send condolences to your mom, and family. She said he was a “wonderful, generous, funny man” whom she and my dad ( Lon Godfrey) enjoyed being around. She also said that my dad felt he was a very good friend. May you find peace at this difficult time. You will miss him terribly, but how wonderful, he was loved by many. I’m sure your dad, and mine are still telling each other stories, where ever they are. Sincerely, Tina Gair.

  • Dale Konrath says:

Our condolences to the Stan’s family from Dale Konrath and family. Stan and Donna were good friends of my parents. Stan was very kind to me personally giving me odd jobs throughout my influential teenage years.

  • Kathy Rogers says:

Jim and I were so sad to hear about Stan and very sorry that we can’t be there with the family to say goodbye. So, we will sit on the beach in Maui (a place that Stan and Donna loved to visit), watch the sun go down behind Lanai and remember all the fun times we had together…especially the laughter. Stan could sure spin a story!
    Aloha Stan

  • Maria McManus says:

Dear Donna, Kathy and Deb: I thank the Lord for the privilege of knowing your loving Husband, Father, Brother and Grandfather. He has touched the hearts of many people over the years, including mine, and I am extremely grateful to have met each of you through Stan. May Our Father in heaven, bless you and keep you, make His face to shine upon you, be gracious to you and fill you with peace.
    Blessings
    Maria
