HUMPHRIES, Reg E.

March 23, 1939 — October 16, 2021

Reg Humphries passed away peacefully in Kelowna on October 16, 2021, at the age of 82. Reg will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Marleen; his children John (Karen), David, and Catherine-Ann; his four grandchildren Grady, Tristen, Cole, and Zoe; his sisters Ann (Ray), Joan (Robert), Susan, and Carol; his brothers John (Kathy), and Franc (Annette); and by his numerous nieces and nephews and their children. Reg was predeceased by his parents, Reginald and Marguerite; brother Ted; sister-in-law Colleen; brother-in-law Alan; nephew Tony; and grandnephew, Elijah.

Reg was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1939.  At the age of 14 he left home and entered the Irish Christian Brothers Seminary in Sydney, Australia, where he trained to be a teacher. After leaving the seminary he immigrated to Canada to teach and settled in Port Alberni, BC where he met Marleen.  After their marriage in 1969, they moved to Salmon Arm where they raised their small family.  He earned his Masters of Education from Gonzaga University in 1980 and his Extended Studies’ diploma from Simon Fraser University in 1984. Reg taught in various elementary schools in the Shuswap district before becoming an administrator. After retirement, Reg and Marleen moved to Kelowna to be closer to family.

Reg enjoyed working with computers, traveling, refereeing rugby, volunteering, and researching history and genealogy.  He was particularly proud of his work with St. Vincent de Paul and especially the planning and set up of a recovery house for men called Ozanam House in Kelowna.

A Funeral Mass will be held to honour Reg’s life with Father Gabriel Chinnaperiannan presiding on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2021 AT 1:00 PM, ST. CHARLES GARNIER PARISH, 3645 Benvoulin Rd, Kelowna, BC. Condolences

  • Marilyn M Melnychuk says:

I am sorry for your loss. Reg will surely be missed. I have fond memories of visits over the years. Ever the gracious hosts, Reg and Marleen felt like good friends from our first meeting. Reg showed such joy in sharing family memories and a few anecdotes about the good old days. It was clear to see his zest for life and love for his family. I will continue to keep the family in prayer.

  • Wayne and Linda Spencer says:

Dear Marlene and Family, we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to you and your family on Reg’s passing. My memories of Reg are most positive. He had the irrepressible smile and was always a most positive person in all my interactions with him. I do recall Reg being an eager, reliable and most capable referee for our school rugby games. When I coached at the old J.L. Jackson, we relied almost exclusively on Reg to handle our games which he always did most competently! We felt honoured to have such a high caliber official in our small town to handle a sport such as rugby. Professionally Reg was an exemplar and when he spoke colleagues listened to whatever he was saying. I do recall that our son Brent was a good friend of David’s and we send to him and each of your family members are sincere regrets and condolences at their Dad’s passing. Best regards, Wayne and Linda Spencer, Tappen, B.C.
