We Remember
ROTHWELL, Lorna
—
1945 – 2026
Lorna Rothwell lived a life full of friendship, laughter, kindness, and connection. She had a remarkable gift for bringing people together, and wherever she went, community seemed to grow around her.
She was the heart behind countless gatherings and friendships. Whether organizing her hiking and snowshoeing groups, coordinating a ladies’ golf group (to name only a couple), or simply making sure no one felt left out, she created spaces where people felt welcome and cared for. To know Lorna was to love her.
Lorna moved through life with a gentle spirit. She was kind-hearted and patient, believing in enjoying life, staying active, and always making time for others. Her warmth put people instantly at ease, and her positivity left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Before dedicating herself fully to family and community, Lorna was a school teacher in Winnipeg. Over the years, many former students shared that she had been their favourite teacher, something that came as no surprise to those who knew her gift for making people feel valued and understood.
She also found joy in life’s simple daily routines: gardening, faithfully completing crossword puzzles, and keeping up with her Duolingo streak every single day. She loved learning, staying sharp, and keeping her mind active.
Lorna also made sure every possible family event was organized so we could cherish countless celebrations for every birthday, holiday, and any other occasion she could think of, bringing everyone together for glasses of wine, cocktails, laughter, and special occasions. Those moments of togetherness meant the world to her.
Above all else, Lorna loved her family deeply. She will be dearly missed by her daughter Dawn Rothwell and her husband Chris Dueck, and granddaughter Tiana Dueck; her daughter Marni Thorpe and her husband Lorry Chernoff, and grandchildren Ashton and Riley Thorpe; and son-in-law Michael Thorpe. She also leaves behind her brother Wilf Sigurdson and a large extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Franklin and Dora Sigurdson; her brother Hugh; and her sister Enid.
She was also a devoted grandma to Gigi, her daughter’s beloved dog, whom she proudly claimed as one of her own. Gigi brought her great companionship and joy.
Her absence leaves an enormous space in the lives of those who loved her, but the friendships she built, the traditions she created, and the kindness she shared will continue through all of us.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Lorna was a special person and it was great to be with her enjoying a drink, curling , having lunch and especially teaching with her for years at Ness Junior High – Heaven has gained a very extraordinary angel!!
Lorna was a lovely person – always calm and thoughtful. She will be missed by all those who have had the pleasure of knowing her.
My father, Rudy Mehmel, was principal of the Oak Point School and Lorna and I were classmates. I have fond memories of the time we spent together at school and at the Sigurdson house. We have followed each other on Facebook so we never really lost touch. Lorna was a beautiful soul and a forever friend. Rest in peace.
As my brother Brian wrote in his comments, my daughter Kaela and I were also so happy to be included in the family reunion at Gimli in 2010. Lorna also helped us to get in touch with and meet family members on our trip to Iceland. She was indeed happy to get people together. She was a very lovely lady, and I know she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
