We Remember
RUSSO, Armerinda
March 1, 1932 — November 27, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving mother, Armerinda Russo, daughter of the late Antonio and Gilda Pucci. She is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Amedeo Russo (d. 2010); her son-in-law, Giuseppe (Joe) Iafrancesco (d. 2018); and grandson, Nicholas Witzke (d. 2021). She is survived by her seven children: Bianca Iafrancesco, Lucia (Rudy) Litz, Florinda (Israel) Salas Barquero, Rita (Kevin) Witzke, Franco (Valita) Russo, Erminia (Noel) Thorpe and Settimio (Carolyn) Russo; her 15 grandchildren: Tracy (Alden) Litz, Ryan (Stacy) Litz, Andrea (Sean) Litz, Francesca Salas, Rebeca (Geoff) Salas, Karli (Lukas) Holy, Justine (Mike) Powar, Andrew (Tyanna) Russo, Eric and Tiana Russo, Emma and Peyton Thorpe, Sophia, Jake and Noah Russo; 12 great-grandchildren; her brothers Florindo (Anna) Pucci and Salvatore (Maria) Pucci, and sisters Maria Berardelli and Ida Pucci; sister-in-law Ida Russo; and many other extended family members.
In 1957, Armerinda and her two young daughters left their small village in Cleto, Cosenza, Italy and set sail across the Atlantic, landing at Ellis Island, New York. From there they travelled across Canada by rail to eventually arrive at their new home in Kelowna, BC. Her husband, Amedeo Russo, who came to Canada two years prior, had prepared for their reunion. Together they worked hard, raised their family and Armerinda was able to live happily in her own home until her remaining years.
Armerinda was a loving mother who always put her family first. After spending many years dedicating her life to raising her children, she eventually worked outside the home, mostly in the hotel industry. Armerinda loved to garden, crochet, read, bake bread, cook and learn about new things. One could never leave her house without having something to eat or drink. After retirement, Armerinda and Amedeo owned and operated their vegetable stand on Casorso Road. She continued to garden up until her 90th year, giving careful attention to her tomatoes and beans. Being extremely proud of their Italian heritage and as original members of the Kelowna Canadian Italian Club, Armerinda and Amedeo also enjoyed attending the many events.
Armerinda lived her life with fierce independence and sense of humour. Our matriarch, whose legacy of love and commitment to family, will live on in the generations of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The children of Armerinda Russo extend immeasurable gratitude to Dr. Alexandra Thomson for her wonderful care over the years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation.
