Rutherford, John
November 11, 1933 — January 17, 2013
John Rutherford passed away suddenly on January 17, 2013 at home. John was an outdoorsman, an avid reader and a dog enthusiast. He was born in Vancouver on November 11, 1933 to Kate and Jock Rutherford and grew up in the area of 28th and Main. As a teenager, he travelled and worked throughout British Columbia and developed a love of the outdoor life. In 1955, he married his childhood friend and sweetheart, Marjorie. They settled in Richmond and together they raised two children. When the children were grown, he pursued his dream of building a log cabin and living the country life. John and Marjorie found this in Atlin, BC, where he read on his many topics of interest, raised dogs and enjoyed the outdoors. Upon moving to Kelowna in 1995, Marjorie’s vision and enthusiasm and John’s love of dogs founded the “Pets and People Visiting Society” of Kelowna which they have worked at for many years. John applied his talents screening dogs for the Society. John is survived by his wife Marjorie, daughter Catherine, son John (Debbie), two granddaughters Christina and Sheena, and two great-grandchildren Camp and Perri. There will be no service by his request. In lieu of flowers donations to Pets and People Visiting Society would be appreciated.
Marjorie & family;
I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing. It was wonderful to work with both of you in Pets & People and I enjoyed watching John work with the dogs at screenings. I will remember him as trying to have a rough exterior but his gentleness and humor shone through that. My condolences to you all. Love Susan and “Bailey”
I was so sorry to read of John’s passing. He was such a friendly man. You will not recognize my name, but we lived in the house at the end of Patterson Ave. on Kinsmen Park and used to chat when you walked your dogs down our street. You will miss him terribly and we extend our sincerest sympathies.
Marjorie, I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing. I always looked forward to seeing both of you at my magazine shop, the little visits and big laughs, John always had advice or a tip for me, whether it was to always keep a pair of boots beside the bed or to never eat yellow snow…..he will be missed. I know it’s been a while, but it’s still a great loss, in my eyes.
I really miss being regaled with tales of great interest while standing behind a counter full of knives. A new one in the hand bringing another tale to mind. I’ll never forget those stories of a life so full that most could never hope to achieve such a thing.
Of all the people I’ve ever met, there was only one other person that ever gave me a feeling of a life so full, and that is Marge. I’ve never known two people that have shared such a rich life.
John is missed by everyone that’s ever heard even a single tale.
