We Remember

SAMUELS, Helen

April 4, 1927 — March 1, 2023

Helen was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on April 4, 1927, and passed away peacefully, with her son, Stephen, and his partner, Marta, at her side, at Orchard Manor, in Kelowna, British Columbia, on March 1, 2023, at the age of 95.

Our family is consoled that Helen is finally re-united with the love of her life, her husband of 66 years, Sol, who passed away in 2013.

Helen, who is called “Mem” by her family, is survived by her 3 children and their spouses/partners, Brian and Jan, Barbara and Bud, and Stephen and Marta; her 5 grandchildren, Jill, Adam, Brent, Sean, and Stephen; her 4 great-grandchildren, Cole, Evan, Drew, and Harper; and her sister Norma.

Helen grew up in a musical family and as a young girl was an enthusiastic violin player. Her violin from that time is still being used today by her 14-year-old great-grandson, Cole, as he practices for, and performs with, his high school orchestra.

Helen had a long career as a fashion model and a clothing consultant in Ottawa. She was known as one of the top models in the area, and (to their chagrin), she occasionally got modelling jobs for Sol and/or their 3 children. Helen was a retail clothing consultant for many years and didn’t retire until she was 83 years old – quite exceptional.

After Sol retired, Helen and Sol spent winters in Indialantic, Florida, where they had many close friends and a very active social life. After living in Ottawa for over 60 years, Helen and Sol moved to Kelowna, to be closer to their son, Stephen.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Koss, the nurses and all of the other caregivers at Orchard Manor, all of whom have provided such wonderful care for Helen, our “Mem”, for the last 2 ½ years.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Helen’s name to The KGH Foundation – Palliative Care Program, 2268 Pandosy St., Kelowna, BC, V1Y 1T2.
