We Remember

SARGENT, Marguerite Olive “Maggie” (née Irvine)

June 18, 1936 — February 23, 2024

Marguerite “Maggie”  Sargent, age 87, of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away in Lumby, British Columbia on February 23, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Winnipeg in 1936, to Samuel and Malinda Irvine, mom spent her formative years in Morris and Emerson, Manitoba.  As a young adult, she attended Normal School (teacher college). After graduating, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Manitoba.  In 1956, Marguerite met the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Sargent.  They married a year later, and mom devoted many years to raising their five children in Winnipeg, while employed at various part-time jobs to support the family.  After the children were grown, Marguerite cherished working as a librarian for the City of Winnipeg until she retired.

Maggie and Dick enjoyed many poker games with dear friends over the years. In retirement, they delighted in numerous gatherings with family and friends at “The Farm” in Petersfield, Manitoba, known affectionately as The Sargent’s Mess.  After the death of her husband in 2007, she moved to British Columbia to be closer to family.

Marguerite had a love for piano, dancing, reading, and completing her daily crossword puzzle. She was a long-time fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Winnipeg Jets, always cheering them on. She was outgoing and creative, and she treasured moments of animated storytelling with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The grandchildren came to lovingly call her GMA, and the great-grandchildren fondly called her GG.

Marguerite was predeceased by her husband Dick; brothers James and Robert Irvine; brother-in-law Emil Treichel; son-in-law Dwayne Stragier; and her dog KC, whom she adored.  She is survived by sister Irene Treichel; sister-in-law Joan Irvine; daughters Sheryl Sargent, Sandy Allard (Dwight), Carla Stragier, and Kathy Regan (Reg); son Richard Sargent (Dana); grandchildren Selina, Garrett (Danielle), Jessalyn (Cole), Carma (Albert), Nicole (Bradley), Ashley (Keaton), Madison, Adam, Samantha, Matthew, and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Sierra, Sophia, Alexandra, Aiden; and numerous extended family members.

A Celebration of Life and interment will be held at a later date in Winnipeg.

We wish to thank the 3E/W staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital; and a special thank you to granddaughter Danielle for her loving care after mom’s passing. We also extend our appreciation to the staff at Monashee Mews in Lumby, BC.
