We Remember

SCHMUNK, Hannah Martha
October 18, 1932 — June 11, 2025
With deep love and gratitude, we remember the life of Hannah Schmunk, who passed away on June 11, 2025, after a life richly lived in faith, family, and service.
Born on October 18, 1932, in Holden, Alberta, Hannah moved with her family to the southern Okanagan Valley in 1942. It was there, at just ten years old, that she met her lifelong companion, Rheuben Schmunk.
Their bond grew over the years, and after graduating from Bible college in Victoria, Hannah and Rheuben married on August 8, 1952. This marked the beginning of a remarkable 72-year journey together, raising a family and ministering to communities across Canada and beyond.
Their ministry with Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (POAC) began in Princeton, where their children, Linda and Eugene, were born. From there, they moved often: to Coal Harbour, Revelstoke, Quesnel, Port Alberni, Kamloops, Langley, Toronto, and eventually settled in Kelowna. In Coal Harbour, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Rheuben restored a fishing boat to minister to remote villages; an adventure Hannah supported, though not without reservation.
Hannah was the heart of the home, always present for her children after school and nurturing a warm, open household. When Linda and Eugene longed for more siblings, Hannah promised they could have as many children as they liked when they grew up; and they did: Linda had six, and Eugene seven. Hannah cherished her role as grandmother, later planning legendary family reunions in Kelowna and Penticton.
A true partner in ministry, Hannah’s contributions were countless. She facilitated women’s groups, taught Sunday school, played the piano, and made their home a hub of hospitality and fellowship. Together, she and Rheuben helped build churches, some literally from the ground up.
In Toronto, they were called to work at the head office of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. It was during this time that they led a group to the Holy Land and attended conferences in Europe, visiting many countries on that continent. While Hannah and Rheuben lived in Toronto, they generously helped many of the family visit them in that city.
Hannah had a gift for connecting with people. She was friendly, outgoing, and a natural encourager. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, strength, and kindness.
Hannah was a loving partner and strong support for Rheuben, her husband of 72 years. Above all, she loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and took great pride in all their accomplishments. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Linda (Barry); son Eugene; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; extended family members; and friends around the world.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 1:00 PM (PDT), at Evangel Church, 3261 Gordon Drive, Kelowna, BC. I served as a Youth Pastor with Rheuben & Hannah in Kamloops in the 80’s. They have been Spiritual parents to me for over 45 years! Amazingly, we were blessed to visit them in Kelowna in April of this year enjoying a wonderful cup of coffee with them at their residence! Very special memories extending over decades! Our love to the family!
Rheuben my heartfelt sympathy in th loss of your beloved Hannah. I was so overly to have time with you both at a Kelowna cafe several years ago now. Hannah was two years older than me and I loved my time with her. May the Lord strengthen and comfort you in your loss. Love and blessings, Mary.
We have precious memories of Brother and Sister Schmunk; they were always encouraging, supportive, and willing to share their lives with us. May God comfort Reuben and the family for their temporary loss; we’ll all meet again, and heaven will make amends for all we suffer here.
God Bless you all.
Ted & Chris Boodle
Rheuben, our condolences on your loss of Hannah. You two were so so friendly, encouraging and uplifting to us. Even in the everyday interactions of life, such as getting your taxes done or just running into us at a store, you left us cheered and encouraged. You reflected Jesus in the everyday. Wishing you God’s comfort in this time.
