We Remember

SCHMUNK, Rev. Rheuben Loyd
February 2, 1932 — July 24, 2025
In the early hours of the evening on July 24, 2025, after a life guided by the Gospel, lived with compassion, and offered in faithful service, our dear father, Rev. Rheuben Schmunk, passed away. He joined his wife of 72 years, Hannah, just 6 weeks after she passed through the gates of Heaven.
From a young age, Rheuben knew that spreading the ministry of the Lord would be his life’s work. After graduating from Bible College, he married Hannah, his partner in life and work. Rheuben and Hannah’s 72-year journey of ministry took them across BC and across Canada – together, they pioneered churches, grew congregations, and ministered in many communities. In those early years in Princeton, BC, he literally built the church from the ground up. Rheuben and Hannah’s two children, Linda and Eugene, were born during this time. In Coal Harbour, BC, he remodelled an old fishing boat to visit and hold services at several indigenous villages, as well as looking after a church in Coal Harbour itself. They went on to serve in Revelstoke, Quesnel, Port Alberni, and Kamloops in BC, remaining in each community until the church had flourished and was firmly rooted. From 1983 to 1989, while Rheuben and family lived in Langley, BC, he was the District Superintendent for the BC & Yukon district of the Pentecostal Assemblies Of Canada (PAOC). In 1989, Rheuben took on the job of treasurer in the national office of PAOC, necessitating a move to the head office in Toronto, ON.
After retiring in 1996, they returned to British Columbia and settled in Kelowna. Never one to fully step away from ministry, he became the seniors’ minister at Evangel Church and found great joy in those years of service. Their time in Kelowna was rich with connection and purpose. When they moved into The Chateau, he began a weekly Bible study – a gathering that was both appreciated and well attended. Loved by many, both residents and staff, they remained a steady presence of faith and kindness in the community.
Throughout his lifetime, Rheuben led many to the Lord and touched many hearts.
Rheuben is survived by his daughter, Linda (Barry); son Eugene; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife Hannah; and by his brother, Gil Schmunk; and his grandson Jeremy Kurtz

Thinking of u at this time of loss both parents in such a short time. May our wonderful Lord and Savior be your peace. Your Dad was our pastor in Quesnel. God Bless you 🙏🌺
Bro.. Schmunk spoke on several occasions for The Pentecostal Assemblies of Newfoundland and Labrador.. I happen to have been involved directly with the services at Camp Emmanuel and came to love and appreciate him for his almost indescribable kindness, gentleness and the heart of a servant.
May you all cherish his memory as you look forward to the great day when you will be reunited with him.
Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of such a great pastor! I still remember his in depth study of Ephesians so many years ago at Camp Emmanuel in Lewisporte, NL. I loved him then, I love him still! Go on ahead brother Shmunck and join the throng that you so deservedly should be with! You have served God and His people well!
It was my great honor to join Bro Schmunk in ministry at Camp Emmanuel in Lewisporte Newfoundland many years ago. I was the night speaker for the camp and he was the morning Bible teacher on at least two different years. He was a lovely, compassionate, kind and friendly gentleman of the Word of God, whom I have never forgotten. Our time together would have been in the mid 90’s but I have never forgotten him and have often wondered whatever happened to him. A friend in Newfoundland sent me the notice of his passing and I am so grateful that he did. Bro Schmunk, I’ll meet you in the morning! May God comfort this family with the firm knowledge that this cherished loved one was a true man of God.
We so appreciated Bro Schmunk as our District Pastor for many years. It was an honour to have him and Hannah serve on our staff at Evangel in Kelowna as our Seniors Pastor. He took a warm personal interest in everyone. Every baptismal service we could count on thee being candidates that Reuben had led to faith. How be and Hannah will be enjoying heaven together!
Bro. Schmunk & his ministry are well documented in his
book, “THE STORY TELLER”. A super read !!! John Hartman.
He was a prince of a man, so gracious & kind.
I first met Pastor Schmunk when he was pastoring in Quesnel and he would come up to Wells on Wednesday afternoons and have a “hobby class” for the kids in the area. He had many stories to tell of his travels over those treacherous gravel roads in the wintertime. He took some of us to camp where I accepted the Lord. In later years he officiated at our wedding and then at our daughters wedding. I will always remember him as my first pastor and appreciate the influence he had on my life.
I was Rheuben’s Youth Pastor at Calvary Temple in Kamloops, BC in the 1980’s! He had and still has a profound influence in my life as a Spiritual Father in the faith. Susan and I were blessed to see them one more time in April of 2025 while visiting Kelowna! How precious that visit is to us now!! Our love and prayers to the family!
