SEITZ, Hildegard Elisabeth

December 16, 1922 — December 8, 2016

Hilde passed away peacefully on December 8, 2016, at Spring Valley Care Centre surrounded by loving friends and wonderful caring staff.  Hilde will be deeply missed by Helga and Peter Torner-Schmitz and their daughter Nicole(Jeff) Mungar and son Mike (Jade) Torner.  Hilde was always a part of our family and we cherish the many memories we had in Kelowna for the past 22 years, with our children and their extended family members.

Hilde was born in Germany on December 16, 1922. She had two brothers and one sister who predeceased her. Her father died when she was three years old. She became a housekeeper and cook for a very wealthy Henkel family in Düsseldorf, Germany. On June 16, 1961 at the age of 39, Hilde married and, together with her husband Joseph, immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1964. She again found work as a housekeeper in Canada and loved her work. In 1966, she met Helga whom she soon came to consider her adopted daughter. In 1982 Hilde and her husband decided to move to Niagara Falls, where Helga, who at the time was a single mom, lived with her children. She was a great help to Helga with housework, cooking and babysitting. In 1988 Hilde’s husband died of lung cancer; she felt very lonely and depressed.  In 1994, with Helga and Peter’s encouragement, she joined them in their move to Kelowna, BC. She loved Kelowna and enjoyed Helga’s first granddaughter Danielle tremendously.  She became a big part of Peter’s and Helga’s children’s lives and their growing families. Hilde enjoyed all family reunions with good food, much laughter and all the grandchildren around. She loved being Tante Hilde and always took great interest in each person’s life.

In 2006 Hilde faced cancer and many more health challenges and was not able to attend church services regularly. Yet she loved and treasured the many visits from our church family with time spent in prayer, singing and praising God. By God’s grace and, with thanks to the very dedicated staff at Spring Valley Care, Hilde was able to enjoy life until God called her home.  She will be deeply missed; yet we rejoice in the promise of eternal life.

A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 3:30 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road. A Celebration of Hilde’s life will follow on her birthday, Friday, December 16, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Church of God, 3705 Mission Springs Drive, Kelowna, with Pastor Rod Tribiger officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Gideons, c/o 593 Spruceview Place South, Kelowna, BC, V1V 1S8.
