We Remember
SHEPHERD, Jean
—
Jean Mary Shepherd, educator, artist, wife, and mother, passed away from leukemia on May 18, 2015, her 43rd wedding anniversary.
Jean is survived by her loving and caring husband, Lee, as well as her eternally grateful and devoted children, Cody and Laura (Chris). She will forever be remembered by her many siblings: Ruan, Nancy (David), Patti, Tom, Scott, and Jeff (Latha). She was predeceased by her father Wally and is survived by her mother Jo, living in Calgary.
Born in Edmonton, Jean moved to Calgary as a teenager with her family and there met her future husband Lee. After many youthful adventures and marriage, the two moved to Kelowna BC in 1974. Jean and Lee raised their two children with love and care in homes that they built and furnished themselves, surrounded by gardens, trees and wildlife. Jean returned to university in her 40s and received a BA (Hon) in English, earning many achievement awards. She then spent a rewarding decade of teaching and tutoring in adult education at Okanagan College.
Jean’s many loves included English literature and grammar. She was a talented artist, excelling with acrylics and prints, and showing a fine eye for colour. She also took great pleasure in conversation, figure skating, horseback riding, bike riding and walking the Greenway.
A truly fine spirit who lived with dignity and intelligence, Jean will be sorely missed by students, colleagues, friends and family, and all who came to know her.
Jean always maintained her sense of humour and grace. A service in her memory will be held on Saturday, May 23rd, at 1:00 pm at the Springfield Funeral Home in Kelowna BC. Please wear colours. In lieu of donations, flowers are welcomed. Mom loved flowers. My deepest condolences to Jean’s family. I am very shocked and saddened to learn of her passing. She was always so gracious, I never knew she was so ill. I worked with Jean at OUC/OC for a number of years. We often got together to have pep talks about our classes and students. I will always remember her as a caring, kind, and gentle soul.

I’m so shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Jean’s passing. My heart goes out to you all.
I work in the IT department at Okanagan College and got to know Jean as she learned how to use new classroom technologies; Jean was always looking for new ways to engage students. We had many laughs over ‘what cable to put where’ when Jean first started to use Document Cameras.
She had such a beautiful grace about her – always smiling and always ready for a laugh. I will miss her.
I work at the Okanagan College and I just wanted to say that Jean was such a lovely friendly person and was definitely a great asset to the college community. Every time she walked by me on campus she would approach me with such a warm and friendly greeting and smile. She definitely will be missed by all the students and all staff.
