We Remember
SHUMAY, Margaret
January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970
The family of Margaret Shumay wishes to announce her passing on April 11, 2020 at Hospice House in Kelowna, BC at the age of 92.
Margaret “Marg” was born in Avonlea, Saskatchewan on May 5, 1927 to John and Monica Luknowsky. The Luknowsky family moved to Gage, Alberta and then on to Kelowna BC, where Margaret met and married Dan Shumay in 1949. They purchased an orchard, built a house and continued to live in Oyama for the next 50 years and raised their 4 children. After retirement, they moved to Winfield, and after Dan’s death, Margaret moved to Lake Country Manor where she has resided for the last 12 years. Marg, along with her husband, Dan, were long-time residents of Oyama (now Lake Country) where she was involved in many community organizations and activities throughout her life.
Marg is predeceased by her parents, John and Monica Luknowsky, and is the last of her generation of beloved brothers and sisters. She is also predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Dan (2004), her daughter, Cynthia Staicue (2006), her son Jeffrey (1985) and her son-in-law, Al “Scotty” Deans (2017).
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Karen Deans; her son, Bruce Shumay; her grandchildren Alfie Deans, Jennifer Jebb (Jay), Andrew Deans, Ryan Staicue (Jessica), Corey Staicue; and her great-grandchildren Joshua and Jordyn Deans and Aiden and Ashton Staicue; and extended family and good friends.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents for their care and love while residing at Lake Country Manor and to the staff at Hospice House in Kelowna where her last days were spent in comfort and peace.
It was Marg’s request that there be no funeral or memorial service and ask that those whose lives she touched, take a moment to reflect on their memories and remember her in your own special way. Arrangements are in the care of Springfield Funeral Home in Kelowna. If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Condolences.”
Our family send our condolences to your family. It is always hard losing a parent. She was a sweet and loving person. Although we didn’t spend a great deal of time with her I will always remember her with loving thoughts. Sincerely the Birban family
Our hearts go out to Karen and Bruce and all the other family members. I will remember Aunty Margaret for all the wonderful memories I have when I was a child and visited her and Uncle Dan on the farm in Oyama. The fruit orchard was the best place to be. Stuffing our faces until we could not eat another bite of fruit. Aunty Margaret always had a meal prepared for our family after our day in the orchard. She always brought a smile to my face and I am sure that Uncle Dan, Jeff and Cynthia are smiling with her now. May she rest in peace.
Sorry to hear about your mom, we will remember all the good time times at your house. Christmas and summer holidays . Will get together after this Covid is over .Take care from our families. love always 💕🤗

So sorry to hear about Margaret’s passing. Our deepest sympathy, Our prayers and thoughts
are with you.
My mother is a resident of Lake Country Manor, in fact she was a next door neighbour of Margaret’s for the past 3 years. I visit my mom often (before the virus) so I know many of the residents. To me, your mother was a model of what growing “old’ ought to look like. She always had a smile, a hearty laugh, a positive attitude and lots of good common sense. She offered my mom a sheepskin cover when she got her wheel chair – what a kind gesture. She will definitely be missed at the Manor by the residents, staff and the visitors! Our heartfelt condolences to the family.
My condolences to Margaret’s family. I enjoyed my chats with Margaret at The Manor. She was a lovely woman.
Sorry to hear about Mrs. Shumay’s passing. My parents respected, appreciated and laughed with Marg and Dan, and Mr. and Mrs. Luknowsky. Good memories of great people. Thinking of you Bruce.
