We Remember

SILZER, Jacob Melitus

June 29, 1928 — May 13, 2021

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our father, Jacob Silzer, on May 13, 2021, at the age of 92.

Jacob was born to Elizabeth and Joseph Silzer in Cupar, SK on June 29, 1928, the seventh child from a family of ten. The family later settled in Watson, SK where he was raised on the farm and his father ran a gas station in town.

Jacob met his wife Patricia through the R.O.S.S. social club, and they married on July 8, 1953. They moved to Regina in 1955 where they started their family. In 1970, they decided to move to Kelowna, with close friends, after spending vacation time in the Okanagan.

Jacob was a painter by trade and an all-around handy man with no hesitation to take on something new. He also had the talent to make an invention to rectify many problems. He loved social gatherings and music, especially country and western. His favourite memories included trips to Alaska and Hawaii and numerous camping and fishing trips. He had a love for flying and always enjoyed having his brother Emil take him up for a fly, especially when he had a chance to take over the controls. He liked having his family come to visit from out of town and had special times with great-nieces Chelsea and Courtney.

When his girls were young his special talents were giving them bucking horse rides on his back, wrestling on the living room floor, and private dance lessons by holding their hands while they were stepping on his feet. He would often kneel bedside with his daughters to say their bedtime prayers.

He was an active member of the Kelowna Elks for at least 20 years, volunteering 100’s of hours through numerous events. He also volunteered at the Rutland Seniors Centre and enjoyed the activities provided there.

Jacob is survived by his two daughters Kathy and Cindy (Nick); granddaughters Rebecca (Terry) and Amanda (Mike); great-grandchildren Hayley, Sarah and Liam; brother Emil (Faye), sisters-in-law Bettie, Judy, and Mary, and brother-in-law Ray (Marilyn); and by numerous nieces and nephews and their families; and special friends Bonnie and Matt.  He was predeceased by loving his wife of 66 years, Patricia; his parents Elizabeth and Joseph Silzer; sisters Clara and Agnes (Mike), and brothers Rudy, Fernie (Julia), Carl (Evelyn), John (Hattie), Frank (Reta) and Joseph (Hazel).

God bless you Dad. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

We would like to thank the Care Aids and staff at Spring Valley Care Home for taking care of our father during this most difficult time.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, service arrangements will be announced at a later date.
