We Remember

SMITH, Harley Beaton

July 21, 1932 — July 13, 2026

Harley Smith, a beloved resident of Oyama since 1934, passed away peacefully at the age of 93. Born in Winnipeg in 1932 to loving parents, Alex and Myrtle Smith, he grew up in the heart of Oyama where his family owned and operated the Smith’s General Store — a cornerstone of the community.

After graduating in the first graduating class of Rutland High School, he embarked on a journey that took him to different cities, working for Riley’s Reproductions in Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton. However, his heart always remained in Oyama, and he returned with his wife Ali, to run Blue Water Lodges alongside his parents for many years. Later in his career he dedicated his time and expertise to Canfor and Home Building Supplies in Vernon until his well-deserved retirement at the age of 82.

Harley was a man who cherished his friendships and had a warm welcoming spirit. His home in Oyama on Kalamalka Lake was a gathering place for lifelong friends where laughter and memories filled the air. Harley had a deep passion for trains and enjoyed many trips across North America with his good friend Murray. Skiing at Silver Star and boating came a close second.

Harley is survived by his loving wife Alice (Ali); their children Craig Smith (Julia Dais) and Suzanne Konings; and his grandchildren, Charles Smith (Skye) and Katie Smith. He was predeceased by his grandson Alexander Smith Zebellos in 2024.

In accordance with Harley’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Instead, he wanted his friends and family to gather and raise a toast to the beauty of the Okanagan, a place that held a special spot in his heart.

Let us remember Harley for the wonderful person he was, his love for life, and the countless lives he touched with his warm hospitality and unwavering friendship.
