SMITH, Lillian (Babs) May (nee Hamer)

January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970

Passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the Central Okanagan Hospice House surrounded by her loving family and gentle support of the palliative care staff.

Born in Brantford, Ontario, Babs enjoyed a great life filled with the joys around her greatest wealth, her family.  She was known for her keen sense of humour, unflagging cheery spirit and exuberant, positive outlook.  Friend and neighbours alike enjoyed Babs’ kind hearted warmth and genuine affection.

Babs will be dearly missed by her children; Lyn, Randy (Linda), Debbie (Mike), Mark (Angie) and Lori (Don).  Further abiding in her grace are nine grandchildren; Jennifer, Shelley, Kathy, Christina, Brian, Christopher, Doug, Jordan and Madison.  As well, eleven great grandchildren will continue to grow touched and influenced by her presence.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the many friends and neighbours who supported Babs through her illness.  Special thanks to all staff who kept her spirits up during her journey.  Thank you Dr. Peter Butterworth for the care and compassion consistently provided over the years.

Grandma. Thank you for being my Grandma. You taught me unconditional love, how to have patience, and the importance of Family. Your laughter, sense of humor and unselfish nature will be something I carry with me forever. I look forward to our next visit together as I know you’ll have the kettle on and (maybe if I’m lucky) a big bowl of your potato salad waiting for me.

  • Debb (Smith) Cain says:

Mom…..thank you for teaching me the joys you receive in families. I now share this love with my family and they will carry this forward. Thank you for allowing us the gift of sharing your last days on earth – the laughter even to the end I will tuck in my heart forever. I will keep your wishes to me and you keep my wishes to you forever. We miss you so much.

  • Randy & Linda Smith says:

For over 65 yrs you were my mom and I love you for that. You were “Simply the Best”. Through the years you taught me how to love and share that love with my wife Linda and our two daughters, Jennifer and Shelley. As a “Smith” member, we all learned to be strong, caring and tolerant, especially when the entire family got together as it was always a fun filled event with some family member taking their turn to be picked on. You couldn’t proudly carry the name of Smith unless you took your turn. I promise you Mom, we shall forever carry forth this laughter filled event. I (we all) will miss you Mom and all the happiness and joy you blessed our family with. We didn’t always agree especially on sports but I’ll never hold it against you being a closet Calgary Flames Fan because that little guy (Theron Fluery) reminded you of me. We love you Mom.

  • Francis (Hospice Volunteer) says:

My condolences and prayers; though I did not know your mother, meeting you was a blessing. In each of you, your mother’s spirit lives on.
