We Remember
SMITH, Phyllis May
—
1925-2022
Her very hands reflect a loving heart!
Phyllis May Smith passed away peacefully in her own home on June 11, 2022, in Kelowna, BC. Her loved ones were able to be with her, both in person and virtually, on the day she left her earthly home and went to her heavenly home to be with her Lord and Savior and her loved ones who have gone on before.
On April 30, 1925, Frank and Winnifred Cartwright of London, England, were blessed with the arrival of a beautiful baby girl, Phyllis May Cartwright. The Cartwright family was a busy home full of children… Phyllis had two older sisters (Joyce and Olive) and two younger sisters (Hazel and Freda). When WW2 began in 1939, Phyllis was evacuated to the countryside to finish her regular schooling, then returned to London for further education as a student nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she qualified as a Registered Children’s Nurse. Phyllis married Allen Smith in 1950. Allen and Phyllis immigrated to Canada in 1957, accompanied by their three English-born children (Susan, Paul, and Graham). Later, Raphael, their fourth and final child, joined the family as the only native born Canadian!
Phyllis’ wonderful smile brought joy everywhere: in the home, as a loving mother to her children; in the workplace, as a loving caregiver; in the church, with Pioneer Girls and Friendship classes with the mentally challenged; in the community, blessing neighbours and seniors in care homes. When she was in hospital recently, the nurses all commented on how sweet she was, and how her smile brightened their day!
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Allen; her son Graham; and her sisters Joyce, Olive, and Hazel. She is survived by Susan Smith (her loving daughter who lived with her); her sons Paul (Janneke) and Raphael (Esther); daughter-in-law Jenny; seven grandchildren Monique, Justus (Jennifer), Arend (Tamara), Lisa (Luis), Ed (Jannette), Mikayla, and Will; and six great-grandchildren. Phyllis is also survived by her sister Freda and other extended family in England.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the friends and neighbours who have been so supportive in recent years. Phyllis will be dearly missed, but we know her vibrant smile will be lighting up heaven!
Phyllis will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Allen, at a private family interment in West Kelowna, BC. A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, June 27, 2022, at 1:00 pm (PDT), at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, with reception to follow. My heartfelt condolences to the family! Phyllis contacted my husband shortly after we moved to Kelowna with him being the new pastor with Adult ministries…asking him to share a Bible Story with the mentally challenged group which she was hosting! That was the beginning of many Bible stories, What a gifted lady!! The group loved her as she demonstrated her love to each one, I often went along with my husband to see our God at work as they worshipped together on Sun. afternoon…these dear folks sang with such gusto. This sweet lady will always be missed by many and will be welcomed at Jesus’ feet!!♥♥
Our hearts go out to you today, we will be joining you via the livestream to celebrate the life a wonderful lady. She will never be forgotten and will be remembered and admired always.
May the presence of the Spirit, your loved ones, and the memories and stories you share bring you peace, comfort and draw you closer to one another at this time of great loss. The loss of one’s mother is a great one indeed. Blessings on you all.
