We Remember

SMITHWICK, Joyce

1925 -2022

Mary Louise “Joyce” Smithwick was born in Montreal, QC on December 30, 1925. Joyce passed away, peacefully going to God’s home, on March 19, 2022, in Kelowna, BC. She spent the majority of her life (71 years) with her husband, Jerry. They raised their family and ran their business (Smithwick’s Physiotherapy Clinic) in Saskatoon, SK. Mom was an active volunteer in many community charities, such as the Catholic Women’s League and the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon. She was also an active sports/athletic participant and fan. Mom loved spending time with family and was a gracious host of innumerable social gatherings with a long list of friends. She cherished laughter, books, her dog Cleo, and lively discussions about politics and many other topics of interest.

Mom and Dad moved to Kelowna over 20 years ago to continue enjoying their retirement and to be near family. They made many new friends and interests in their adopted community. Dad passed away at age 98 years in 2017.

Joyce is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: her son, Norm (Linda) Smithwick, grandchildren Jeff and Marla (Shak), and great-grandsons Simon and Sebastian; her son, Tom (Mary Ann) Smithwick, granddaughter Renee (Tom), and great-grandson Joshua; her son, Jerry (Tamar) Smithwick, granddaughter Kyla, and great-granddaughters Emma and Anna; her daughter, Barbara Smithwick; and many extended family members.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joyce may be made to Freedom’s Door Recovery Home in Kelowna.

  • Dave & Barb Sparrow says:

Joy and Gerry are really missed. For over twenty years they were the most wonderful neighbours anyone could ever
want. We will never forget Joy’s large family of ducks she regularly fed, and Jerry’s lost watering cans. Wonderful memories of two wonderful people with whom we shared many great laughs.

  • Beth Vallieres says:

Dear Norm, Tom, Jerry, Barbara and family,
As I told Barbara, although I didn’t know your mom well, I was always struck by her elegance and sense of humour. She will obviously be so missed by you all, but will live on through family memories and expressions.
    All the best,
    Your cousin Beth
