We Remember

SOROSKIE, Diane Edna (née Schmidt)

June 26, 1944 — June 25, 2026

Born on June 26, 1944, in Winnipeg, MB, Diane passed away unexpectedly, on June 25, 2026, at Kelowna General Hospital, in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 81.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, John Soroskie, who is devastated by the loss of his “babes”.

Also heartbroken by Diane’s passing are three daughters Brandy (Ben), Cherise, and Tia-Maria; ten grandchildren Tera (Sean), Bobby, David (Heather), Rocco, Johnny, Rava, Matthew, Eve (Simon), Brandon, and Jett; and four great-granddaughters Bryn, Sadie, Lauren, and Lilah.

Additionally, Diane is survived by her sister Jo-Ann (Bill), and cherished nieces Shalee, Kelli, Laurie, and their families. As well as many much-loved nieces and nephews on John’s side of the family.

Diane now goes to join those who passed before her including her parents David and Edna (Schwartz); brother Ron and beloved sister-in-law Shirley Schmidt; and nephews Kevin and Robbie.

Raised in the “North End” of Winnipeg, Diane “Smitty” was petite in size but grand in spirit. She would humorously recall many “North End” stories where her tenacity was key to survival. Diane met John while she was working as a car hop and although people said it wouldn’t last, their relationship was filled with humour, admiration, and passion. John referred to her as “beautiful” and that she was! Diane was also very intelligent and a gifted writer. She enjoyed working and was employed with banks, oil companies, and government. Diane and John built a wonderful life and many fabulous homes together. They also collaborated on small businesses in Kelowna, Country Charm, and Rave Fashions, which produced many fondly remembered customers.  She enjoyed her life fully and was never afraid to take a risk!

Diane’s motto was “Que sera sera” and this represented her ever cheerful disposition perfectly. Her uplifting spirit spread optimism and hopefulness to many around her. She was incredibly dynamic and proud of her self-declared “Chutzpah”!

Most importantly, Diane’s family was her greatest treasure. She was famous for her lavish Christmas celebrations complete with glitzy décor where everyone was welcome. Diane would happily prepare her home and the meal months in advance. She was THE best cook and loved to feed her grandchildren; continually adding new dishes to her repertoire to please everyone.

In her later years, Diane could be found in the casino bragging about her grandchildren, fabulously decked out in bling, faux fur and of course, her signature red lipstick.

Love you sugar! xo

A celebration to honour Diane’s life will be held at a later date.
