We Remember

SPALL, Doris Eveline

March 29, 1922 — April 7, 2013

Independent lady, Mother, Friend, Grandma, Friend, Great Grandma, Aunt, Friend and Cat Fancier died in the early hours of Sunday, April 7th. She was 91.

Born in Armstrong, the youngest of four daughters, Doris lived in the Okanagan, a place she loved and happily shared with her five children, each of whom returned during her later years.

Doris is survived by her four children, Nancy Branch (Don), Deborah Cochrane (Larry), Lori Perdue, Jamie Spall (Maureen) and son-in-law Henk DeRoos.  Grandchildren Tyler Ballam (Sophie), Brett Ballam, Chris Cochrane (Terra), Kelsey Cochrane (boyfriend Jake), Faith and Darci Perdue. Three Great grandchildren; Jenson Cochrane, Ethan, Emmalyn and special niece Kerri Sutherland as well as the final of her feline companions Penny, who now lives with the Branchs.

Doris was saddened by the early deaths of her daughter Jennifer DeRoos, grandson Connor Cochrane and the father of her children, Bob Spall. Doris was an RN, graduating from Royal Columbian in 1945, a career that helped her as well as the many people she helped over her 40 years of nursing. Working on Maternity at KGH, she knew so many of her children’s peers and she never forgot anyone, nor was she easily forgotten. Her contagious laugh and smile connected her permanently with the community.

Doris excelled at friendship, a trait that came naturally. She made friends easily and once a friend, always a friend.  Doris’s lifelong special friends, Betty Marsh and Sylvia McTavish will attest to that! She had many close girlfriends whom she cherished as they journeyed through good times and tough times: working, marriage and raising children.   Her nursing buddies were gold and she never missed a class re-union, no matter how tight the money or time.

For everyone, she loved to find that perfect card.  She chose gifts thoughtfully and she loved to write and receive letters.  She loved to bake special treats, and did so for a chosen few, year after year. As her eyesight failed in later years, she relied on friends and family to help her with these acts of kindness.

The family would like to extend gratitude to the staff at Brookhaven for the love, humanity and care beyond compassion they showed during her time there.

Throughout her life Doris was extremely generous, donating to a variety of charities.  As a living legacy, in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charitable organization of your choice.

A life well lived.

  • Kim McClelland says:

Lori,Debbie,Nancy & Jamie ~ too many memories to even start to mention about Doris and her relationship with Shirley, the relationships all us McClellands had with her growing up on Spall Road. I know how happy Dad was to always have those chocolate macaroon treats at Christmas time. It wasn’t Christmas for him without them. Doris was a part of our world for so long, and will continue to be as we remember her laughter and particular way of strongly suggesting ‘the next time you’re in town, you better come see me!’, especially if she found out you’d been there and hadn’t! Always plugged into the grapevine of family and friends – she lived her life long and well. A devoted mom, grandma, and true, blue friend. My love to you all ~ thanks for sharing her with us.
