We Remember

SPELLISCY, Kathleen (Kae) (nee Sutherland)

Kae came from a large close knit family and spent her lifetime stewarding one of her own. Born the 5th of 11 children on January 29, 1925, to Herb and Nellie Sutherland in Palmer, SK, Kae passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Kelowna, BC, on January 10, 2012, just 2 weeks before her 87th birthday.  Sadly predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Hal; sons, Pat and Terry; siblings, Ed (Doris), Lloyd, Mary, Irene, Don and Ken; and grandson, Christopher.  Lovingly remembered by her children Mary Ellen (Denis), Mike (Gwen), Tim (Peggi), Dan (Cheryl), Anne (Lorne), Barb (Peter), Joe (Sheila), Kathleen (Ian), Hal Jr. (Jennifer) and Irene (Tim).  Kae was adored by 19 grandchildren, Mark, Troy, Brett (Danijela), Erin, Patrick, Meg, Courtney, Connor, Lawton, Keegan, Maddie, Cole, Dylan, Bridget, Griffin, Braeden, Cara, Macgregor and Finn; siblings Bruce (Shirley), Rose (Carl), Keith (Mona) and Myrt (Bill); in-laws Keith, Olga, Helen, Art, Bill (Rita), Marguerite, Isabel and Mary (Bob); and by Cheryl’s children, Kelly, Travis and Nicole.  She was proud to be matriarch of an extended family now numbering into the hundreds.

Kae’s quick mind was demonstrated by her finishing high school at 16, encouraging continuing education to her children and grandchildren, and her lifelong love of reading, crosswords and games.  Kae was very fun-loving and social; she loved to gather with friends and family on any occasion from holidays to reunions but what we were all really celebrating was God’s greatest gift – love.  She had a quick wit, loved to chat, to sing and to dance with anyone who had rhythm. She took every opportunity to speak proudly of her children and grandchildren to anyone who would listen.  We had a tradition of family brunch after Sunday mass from our early childhood to last week.  She was a person of strong faith and that relationship with God helped her through many tragedies.  A strong believer in the power of prayer, Kae endlessly requested prayers on behalf of others and left a home scattered with snippets of favored sacred scripture.  Wrapping her children in a life time of unconditional love, Kae gave to them the security and confidence to succeed on their own.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Rachel Carver for her extraordinary and thoughtful care, and Kae’s neighbors for their many special kindnesses.  Prayers and a celebration of Kae’s life will be held in Edmonton.  In Kelowna, a Memorial Service will be held at St. Charles Garnier on Friday, January 20 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow.  Memorial donations in Kae’s name may be made to the ALS Society of British Columbia (www.alsbc.ca).  Condolences may be sent to the family by visitingwww.connelly-mckinley.com.

She carried me under her heart.

She loved me before I was born.

She took God’s hand in hers,

and walked through the valley of shadows that I might live.

From the poem “My Mother” found in the old log home of Kae’s grandparents in Clandeboye, Manitoba.
