We Remember

STEELE, Frederick

June 19, 1946 — August 4, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Fred on August 4, 2026, at the age of 80.

Born on June 19, 1946, in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Fred’s heart never truly left the East Coast. Although his family moved to Winfield, British Columbia, in 1948, he carried his Maritime roots with him throughout his life. Whether through his stories, his values, or his love of old country music, a piece of his heart was always out East.

Fred was predeceased by the love of his life, his beloved wife, Joan Forbes, whom he met in Vernon, British Columbia, in 1988. Together, they blended their two families into one, and from that day forward built a life filled with love, companionship, and laughter. He often said he loved Joan “to the moon and back,” and that love remained unwavering throughout their years together.

Fred leaves behind a family who meant everything to him: his children, Cindy, Steven (Jenelle), Sean, Craig (Lisa), Lynn (Robert), Steve, and Jan; 20 cherished grandchildren; 11 treasured great-grandchildren; his sisters, Carole and Linda (Gary); along with many nieces and nephews who will forever remember his kindness and generous spirit.

Known for being fiercely loyal and deeply caring, Fred touched the lives of many. Family was always his greatest priority, and he took immense pride in watching each generation grow. His love, guidance, and quiet strength will continue to live on in those who knew him.

Fred lived a remarkable and varied life, embracing every opportunity that came his way. Over the years, he worked as a radio announcer, disc jockey, nightclub manager, orchardist, and served with the British Columbia Fruit Growers’ Association. Passionate within his community and the issues he believed in, he also ran as an NDP candidate. His creative spirit found expression through writing, and he was a novelist and poet, always eager to share his thoughts, stories, and imagination with others.

Music was one of Fred’s greatest passions. He loved all genres, but old country music held a special place in his heart. Music wasn’t simply something he listened to—it was woven into the fabric of his life, bringing comfort, joy, and connection wherever he went.

Those who knew Fred also knew his endearing quirks. He was a famously picky eater and had absolutely no time for onions. These little traits, along with his warm smile, thoughtful conversations, and unwavering devotion to those he loved, made him uniquely Fred.

Fred’s legacy is one of love, loyalty, creativity, and family. Though his absence leaves an immeasurable void, the memories he created and the lives he touched will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and never forgotten.

Family and friends will gather at a later date to celebrate Fred’s life. Details to be announced.
