We Remember

STEINBACH, Marc

Marc passed away peacefully at Mission Creek Landing in Kelowna, at the age of 92. He was born in Grand Prairie, Alberta on July 17, 1931. He was predeceased by his parents Rudolph and Analiese;  his brother Rolly (Josie); nephew Russel (Audrey); and his longtime friend Jerry Coupel with whom he shared his birthday and many adventures. He is survived by his first wife, Sophie, and their daughters Diana and Linda. He is fondly remembered by a large family and a wide circle of friends, whom were touched by his infectious nature, a good story, and a warm heart.

In 1949 at age eighteen, Marc ventured away from his home in the Peace River area and joined his dad, who was working as a carpenter in Whitehorse, Yukon. Not long after, his mother joined them and they lived in Whitehorse, where Marc worked as a steamboat deckhand beginning  his love of water and steamboats. When the steamboat era came to an end, he began his career and a love of trains with the White Pass & Yukon Railway. He cultivated lifelong and lasting friendships with everyone he met on these life journeys!

Marc moved to Kelowna in 1977, where he spent the remainder of his life enjoying the warmer weather and cultivating another set of lasting friendships.  He owned Marc’s U-Cart, worked as first mate and skipper on the MSS Fintry Queen, and finished his career as a maintenance man at Gold’s Gym.

Marc belonged to the Masonic Lodge #46, the Okanagan Yukoners Association, the Kelowna Seniors Club, and the Okanagan Antique Power Club. In retirement, his favorite pastimes were cribbage, billiards, ten-pin bowling, working on steam engines, and wintering in Naples, Florida where he regularly played harmonica, and enjoyed Blue Grass music.

In typical Marc fashion, there are no services planned…nothing fancy, keep it simple. A Celebration of Life will occur during the warmer weather months with details to be determined.

Marc’s family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Ahmed and the team at Mission Creek Landing Care Home for their outstanding care and generous support during Marc’s final days.
