In the early-mid 1950’s Derek served as a mechanic with the 15th 19th King’s Royal Hussars which was a cavalry regiment of the British Army. With the Royal Hussars, Derek travelled to Germany, Libya and South Korea.  He met and married Rita when he returned to England.

After immigrating to Canada in 1957, Derek and Rita settled in Edmonton, Alberta and then later in 1967 moved to North Delta, B.C. Derek worked as a mechanic for Canadian National Railway road transport division and then later as a foreman for Surrey Fraser Docks.  At retirement Derek and Rita relocated to Lake Country, B.C. where Derek volunteered for the Lake Country Citizen’s Watch.

Derek was passionate about hunting, sailing and dabbled in golf. Mostly, he loved spending time with his family.  He enjoyed life, was a kind person who always lent a helping hand and loved a good laugh. He left this world a good man.

A sincere thank you to all of you at Lake Country Lodge who supported and cared for Derek in his later years. You demonstrated true care, compassion and empathy for Derek and his family all the steps of the way.   Your kindness and support will not be forgotten.

Condolences

  • Diana Cabott says:

We were so sorry to hear about Derek…I only found out this morning. Remembering Derek and Rita as amazing neighbours in Carrs Landing and recalling first moving there years ago and they were the ones I called after going to cook my first meal at the house on Schaad Road and needing vinegar that I didn’t have in the pantry. I brazenly knocked at their door, a complete stranger and was welcomed with open arms. Please do let us know when the memorial will be this summer.
